Horrible narration
Revisado: 07-14-24
The author must be heartbroken to hear how the narration was handled. The consistent mispronunciations are awful to have to hear.
The book was a simple one, like a story for pre-teens, so that’s ok—although I wish it had been labeled so.
But the narration with its 100% consistent, frequent mispronunciations of the German words made a hack job of the whole book.

When Misty was six years old, her family started to live and dress like the Amish. Misty and her sister were kept as slaves on a mountain ranch where they were subjected to almost complete isolation, sexual abuse, and extreme physical violence. When Misty reached her teens, her parents feared she and her sister would escape and took them to an Amish community where they were adopted and became baptized members. Misty was devastated to once again find herself in a world of fear, animal cruelty, and sexual abuse.

Bursting with courage and righteous justice
Revisado: 04-05-24
Remarkable story by a stunningly courageous young woman! The intuitive sense of justice Misty demonstrated again and again throughout her life, and in her graceful telling of her journey, is that of heroes and titans.
This is the kind of human being who redirects the human trajectory toward the light of goodness.
Excellent narration, too. This is a superb production of an extraordinarily important mission. I couldn’t recommend this book too highly.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

An exquisite story
Revisado: 03-26-23
While this is certainly a surreal story, what makes this telling of it so good is how human, how real and faceted the people are, Oleg Gordievsky more than any.
The author did such a excellent job of laying out the story that he may as well have installed the story straight into the cinema of our own minds and pushed ‘Start.’
Above everything, though, is the Everest-high courage of a man infuriated by tyranny and bent on paving a larger swath for goodness. Gordievsky is a modern Mensch, a man of men, to whom all who are guided by goodness (regardless of political preference) owe a debt of gratitude—-and possibly a whole lot more.
Thank you, good sir.

Historia
In 1978, CIA maverick Jack Platt and KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko were new arrivals on the Washington, D.C., intelligence scene, with Jack working out of the CIA's counterintelligence office and Gennady out of the Soviet Embassy. Both men were assigned to seduce the other into betraying his country in the final days of the Cold War, but instead the men ended up becoming the best of friends. Theirs is a friendship that never should have happened, and their story is chock full of treachery, darkly comic misunderstandings, bureaucratic inanity, and landmark intelligence breakthroughs.

Friendship against all odds
Revisado: 01-01-23
What a gripping historical narrative, but very much more so, a story of friendship against all odds. This spy caper is unique among all; its message is about the highest of humanity despite the omnipresence of the lowest, too.

An area long overdue for high profile heroism
Revisado: 12-05-22
My heart breaks for the Velasquez family’s plight. In spite of the horrific betrayal of child molestation, the courage the entire family—starting with the 4 year old child!!!—is displaying is of the highest caliber. They have gone above and beyond. Every family member is a hero in his and her own way.
This was a wonderful series, very well done. It is an area long overdue for the high profile heroism the Velasquez is demonstrating.
But ample credit must also go to the creators of this series whose work is highlighting such a critically important topic. Their public portrayal of child abuse took courage, too. They presented this series with their feet on the ground factually, but also with the kind of driving idealism that really can make a difference.
I can make but a single criticism and that would be to increase the volume of the recorded interviews and messages, the content of which was frequently lost.

Historia
We can encounter chaos in every system around us - even the smallest and simplest ones. Any system can fall into chaos, which prevents us to accurately predict its behavior. Even a small change in the initial conditions can lead to unexpectedly large-scale consequences. Therefore, we can often enter in panic, blame actors for events they are not responsible for, and our sense of security in the world can generally decrease.

Revisado: 06-17-20
This is a wonderful summary of complex topics. Without attempting to oversimplify, the author trims down each topic to its interactive essence and does so engagingly. The story is as alive as a swift riparian flow.

sculpting masterpieces from mounds
Revisado: 04-23-20
Isn't it some kind of mystery that, across the board and around the world, keenly talented, productive, highly contributing women are misaligned with the pecuniary value of their/our work in the marketplace?!
Denise Duffield-Thomas' topic is right on the nose! I laud her for the courage and insight it took for her to break through her own glass ceiling, not only financially, but most important psychologically. Only then could she reach for the rest of us to guide us toward what she sees and does differently that produces all the results.
Furthermore, she's an absolute blast! I love when authors read their own books and listening to Denise chip through the granite mountain of women making money is a treat to behold!
In the end, I see my own gorgeous statue of financial--and psychological--success carved with the help of her guiding hand over mine as I chip-chip-chip away at my masterpiece.
I am deeply grateful, Denise (and still laughing and singing weeks after reading Lucky Bitch)! Keep up the great work. We have a lot of mountains to sculpt and a lot of glass ceilings to break through to free up this world. With women like you, we're gettin' 'er done!

Born into “the blessings of liberty in a free State,” Solomon Northup was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Bayou Boeuf region of Louisiana’s Red River Valley. Twelve Years a Slave is the chronicle of his captivity at the mercy of sadistic plantation owner Edwin Epps, who tested Northup’s tenacity and self-control under the most brutal conditions. Until fate brought a Canadian abolitionist to Epps’s farm, Northup thought he would never draw another free breath.

Historia
Have you wondered why some 60-year-olds look and feel like 40-year-olds and why some 40-year-olds look and feel like 60-year-olds? While many factors contribute to aging and illness, Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn discovered a biological indicator called telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes telomeres, which protect our genetic heritage. Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Elissa Epel's research shows that the length and health of one's telomeres are a biological underpinning of the long-hypothesized mind-body connection.

disappointing, lacking depth
Revisado: 01-14-19
I found this book to be disappointing. My experience of reading was that of a rather serious mismatch between topic and content. While the topic of telomere science is hardly new, it has more or less recently made it to the forefront of public discussions on health. This suggests that readers with more sophisticated expectations of health-focused literature would be the ones first attracted to such books. The audience, one would think, would be readers with a foundational understanding of telomeres who are wanting more scientific depth. But the authors chose, instead, to focus on relaying reams and reams of surprisingly basic health information followed by the obligatory, "this shortens telomeres," and "that lengthens telomeres" appendages.
Blackburn and Epel made multitudinous references to telomere studies--In fact, the breadth and number of studies was my best take home. But I could have gotten that much conducting my own searches, surely saving 95% of the time it took to listen to the book--even at 2x speed. The read was often gruelingly superficial--and I still don't understand telomere science much better than I did before reading.
After awhile, so many shallow assertions hyperactively delivered gave the book a "we're going to save the world" flavor, which eventually brewed in me an equal-but-opposite reaction that manifested as distrust. I don't want to distrust these authors and scientists! This book didn't work at all for me, even with an enduring passion for health and wellness and an insatiable appetite for knowledge of scientific breakthroughs in health.

Hilarious, lively, poignant
Revisado: 02-21-18
I gasped for breath sometimes, laughing so hard! You have to love the endless shenanigans of any teenage boy, this one’s are even better and braver than most in light of his blindness.
The story is peppered with the silent but salient shocked looks of sighted people who wouldn’t—couldn’t—dare do what Eric does but who are, even against their will, inspired to reach beyond their own limitations.
To call Eric “inspiring” is a trivialization of his best gifts. He’s liberating. He’s powerfully creative. He’s a cutting edge leader, a light shone upon the growing edge of human capacity for senses-acuity. With such exquisitely developed acuity, Eric helps all of us integrate what we have in the gift of our human bodies with what we can become in our spirits.
Fantastic, Eric—thank you!
I found the reading to be a bit overwrought at times. Even slightly finer subtlety could have lifted both the humor and poignancy to higher relief. Still, reading was a thoroughly enjoyable, enlightening experience.
