Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Great story, well written, gripping!
Revisado: 03-28-25
This was one of the best books I've read/listen to in a very long time! I love historical fictions like The Girl They Left Behind, The Alice Network, The Book of Lost Names, The Safekeeper, The Rose Code, and books by Hannah, for example, but this one is now my favorite. Highly recommended!!

Great nonfiction
Revisado: 03-03-25
Very interesting perspective of a black woman's journey into white collar crime and then bias treatment through the justice system. There is so much to learn in Smith's experiences. This will be our next school read.

Great story and did not have a simplistic ending.
Revisado: 02-21-25
One of the best books I've read in the last year! Lovely historical fiction that resists pat story lines, has interesting turns, and did not have a predictable end.

Historia
Lina Meisel, a retired librarian in Florida, is reading the newspaper one morning when she freezes. Her eyes lock on a photograph of a book she hasn’t seen in 65 years - a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II - an experience Lina remembers well - and the search to reunite people with the texts stolen from them so long ago. The book in the photograph is one of the most fascinating cases.

Good story! I tend towards historical fiction, this did not disappoint. I read and listened--both experiences were equally satusfying.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Boo!
Revisado: 12-09-24
Given the high praise from the NYTimes, I thought it would be better. It's a first person account of a woman's highly self-centered indulgent experiences. I kept hoping for something meaningful, but no.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Tom Hanks is a great narrator!
Revisado: 09-19-24
I loved listening to Hanks read the story. I typically read/listen to nonfiction as I have little patience for descriptive writing. The story would not have kept me engaged had I read it, but Hank's' reading kept me listening. All in all, the story was sweet and interesting.

A football player with a panic attack problem. A woman who sings like an angel. A baby who needs them both. After leading the Destroyers through their worst season in football history, Sam Dumont gets traded to the Miami Surfs, and to top it all off, his estranged father has a heart attack. Now he’s doing the last thing he ever thought he would do—going to Wolfe Creek, Utah. One-dimensional
Revisado: 09-13-24
The story line was one-dimensional and predictable. I guess it was ok if you're into romance novels. I wanted light reading, it popped up, and the reviews were good. Not sure why. I did a lot of eye rolling as I listened.
Also, it was the first AI narrator I've ever experienced--surprisingly bad. So bad I will now check to make sure a book has a human narrator before I purchase.
