Boring
Revisado: 05-31-23
So boring I deleted it. Dreary, droning and desperately dull. Dreadfully read and densely tedious.

Historia
"If, on an early summer’s night, you wanted to kill a man, how would you do it? Would you lay a trap, sharpen a dagger, uncork a poison? Personally, I’ve always leaned toward the dramatic. But looking back, I wonder now if the events of last summer didn’t begin with a quieter sort of murder." So ponders Alexandra James, a beautiful, driven, yet troubled New England Chronicle reporter. She is assigned to cover the death of Thom Carlyle, son of one of the most powerful men in Washington. Just back from a year abroad, Thom falls from the top of a Harvard bell tower on a warm summer night.

It gets better as it goes along.
Revisado: 10-26-20
The narrator is a good reader, but someone should have tutored her in the basics of English pronunciation- if she can’t say Thames properly, this shouldn’t have been a job for her. The plot thickens as it goes along, so the end is better than the beginning.

A better reader, maybe?
Revisado: 04-30-19
The book was really good, but the reader, who dropped every d or n from each contracted would, should, could, did, etc, and who mispronounced words frequently, did not sound like a highly educated woman, which the character was supposed to be. She sounded unsophisticated.

Historia
Recently engaged and deeply ensconced in her third year of surgical residency in Chicago, Emily Hartford gets a shock when she is called home to Freeport, Michigan, the small town she fled a decade ago after the death of her mother. Her estranged father, the local medical examiner, has had a massive heart attack. At the hospital, she finds her father in near total denial of the seriousness of his condition. He insists that the best thing Emily can do to help him is to take on the autopsy of a senator's teen daughter whose sudden, unexplained death has just rocked the sleepy town.

How does a book like this get published?
Revisado: 03-06-19
I rarely return an audiobook or write a negative review, but this book was terrible, so I’m doing both. The grammar, syntax and editing were all appalling. Full of malapropisms, inappropriate word choices, careless repetition of adjectives and lazy dialogue, it was sloppy from start to finish. And the reader was just as bad, with a completely flat affect, uneducated pronunciation and whiny voice that irritated beyond belief. Thank goodness for Audible’s return policy!

This is strong where others like it fail.
Revisado: 10-31-16
This book starts off feeling a little manipulative, and it has many aspects that feel a little manufactured and expected, but at the end of the day, I listened to it in one sitting, and the end is so well written that I would really recommend it to all audible listeners. Usually psychological thrillers seem to weaken at the end, but this was really well written and powerful down to the last sentence.

Turn up the speed!
Revisado: 06-04-15
Turn the play speed up to 1.25x. I don't know when Scott Brick started reading at half speed and in such an exaggerated style, but making him read faster really helped my enjoyment of the book.
