Historia
When a respected surgeon decides to transplant human body parts into a stray dog, he creates a monster - drunken, profligate, aggressive and selfish. It seems the worst aspects of the donor have been transplanted as well. As his previously well-regulated home descends into riotous chaos, the doctor realises he will have to try to reverse the operation; but the dog isn't so keen....

Fantastic reading of a very funny book
Revisado: 12-27-24
I really enjoyed this a lot. The book is very funny, and the narrator makes it especially so. It's Moscow in the 1920s, the communist dictatorship is still ramping up, but it's not yet Stalin's time and people are adjusting to the new regime. There is fun satire of these early days of Soviet communism, although the most biting satire is of the human "heart." If I knew how to reach the narrator, I'd write to him to thank him for such an enjoyable performance.

Historia
Thomas Mann's last great novel, first published in 1947 and now newly rendered into English by acclaimed translator John E. Woods, is a modern reworking of the Faust legend, in which Germany sells its soul to the Devil. Mann's protagonist, the composer Adrian Leverkühn, is the flower of German culture, a brilliant, isolated, overreaching figure, his radical new music a breakneck game played by art at the very edge of impossibility. In return for twenty-four years of unparalleled musical accomplishment, he bargains away his soul—and the ability to love his fellow man.

Historia
One of the wittiest and most scathing of Henry James' novellas, The Aspern Papers chronicles the attempt to extract the valuable letters of the famous and recently deceased poet Jeffrey Aspern from the hands of his past lover and formidable adversary in the battle Juliana Bordereau. The plot was reputedly suggested to James by a story he heard of an illicit attempt to get hold of several of Lord Byron's letters.

I am listening to this series as I walk too and from work, not taking public transportation, during coronaquarantine. The narrators are all very good; but this is the only one where I have not used whispersync to both read and listen- I don't want to miss any of this great performance. Terrific narration!

Historia
Only Holmes and Watson can get to the bottom of this baffling murder mystery. John Douglas is found in his study, blasted faceless by a sawed-off shotgun. There is no obvious motive or suspect. Douglas and his wife, Ivy, a rich and locally popular couple, have lived for years in the ancient, moated Birlstone Manor House. Despite Douglas' nightly ritual of raising the drawbridge, the perpetrator had somehow concealed himself, shot Douglas, and made a clean getaway.

Automatic computer reader would be better
Revisado: 06-19-14
What disappointed you about The Valley of Fear?
The reader mispronounces words, and does so in a fake English accent. It was too excruciating to listen to for more than a few minutes. I am glad this was discounted. It's very disappointing; I am new to Audible and listened to the phenomenal Branagh read of Heart of Darkness and excellent Kent read of Island of Dr. Moreau and am now being surprised by some very flat, and in this case unlistenable-to, audible book. I picked up a number of others at low cost that are read by the same reader;these were cheap, and maybe he does not add the fake English accent in the other books; guess I will see.
