Sometimes a book will stick with you
Revisado: 04-25-25
….whether you want it to or not. The world, the characters, the events that transpired. This is absolutely one of those books.
It has stayed with me for decades. The thoughts just come back unbidden. The walking, the boys that chose to walk and their varied reasons. I’m not sure why this dystopian world pulls me in in a first person way where other dystopians just let me observe from the periphery.
Let’s go for a walk.

I love this story; it was my first Murakami books and still my favorite. The narrators are perfect for the various characters. I speeded my listening to 1.1-1.5 playback.

Loved this series!!
Revisado: 01-13-25
All three of the books are unique in the genre of science fiction…it’s the character POV that makes it all magic. And the characters.
The narrator is divine; I’ve added her to my ‘fav narrators’ shelf! Will absolutely listen again in the future. The ideas are simply mind-expanding!

I actually love it when an author writes the same story from a different character’s viewpoint. So, yes, as other reviewers have pointed out: it is the same story but this time we get it from Cas’ point of view and voice. Love this retelling!

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

No, No, No…but then Yes!
Revisado: 01-30-23
I have Dervla McTiernan shelved as one of my favorite authors; she won me over with the Cormac Reilly detective series. I love a good crime thriller especially when it’s set in another country. And on Audible, the narrator’s Irish accent is scrumptious.
But, this is nothing like that series. I tried to listen to it 3 separate times and kept being turned off by these two new narrators. But then I forced myself to calm down and try to listen to it with new ears…and, it worked. The narration on this story is actually pretty good; it completely matches the written characters. I felt like the ending was kinda rushed and the antagonist got a little campier the further into the story, but other than that it wasn’t bad.
If you’re a Dervla McTiernan fan, go into this by forgetting the other books and being open to a new short story. You’ll be surprised in a new way.

My Unicorn: a Hidden Gem of a Ghost Story…
Revisado: 11-06-22
There’s something about the way this story was told that’s going to forever keep it atop my favorite ghost stories. It was the storytelling, the narrator, the story itself, the characters, the nonlinear timeline of sorts, but most importantly…it’s the nostalgia it invokes…?!
There’s a crazy uncle that does a lot of questionable things; reminded me of both the crazy professor from Back to the Future and one of my uncles. Good times. There are visits with dead people that are more endearing than creepy. And, there’s a story within a story that just brings it all together.
This is not a book that I would have picked out except that I came across it in one of the Audible book sales; and combing through the pages of books from all kinds of random genres, this one was sitting there. The title got me, the book cover art grabbed me, but that nostalgia….it crept in and hasn’t let go.
This is a new kind of ghost story. Read it. Let it sit with you.
