Historia
Surveillance State tells the gripping, startling, and detailed story of how China’s Communist Party is building a new kind of political control: shaping the will of the people through the sophisticated harnessing of data. It is a story born in Silicon Valley and America’s “War on Terror,” and now playing out in alarming ways on China’s remote Central Asian frontier. As a minority separatist movement strains against Party control, China’s leaders have built a dystopian police state that keeps millions under the constant gaze of security forces armed with AI.

Book was ok. Not as much info as I thought there would be on the overall network of Chinese surveillance.

Historia
This book by military strategist Andrew F. Krepinevich, Jr., is the definitive take on the race for military dominance in the twenty-first century. It shows how militaries that successfully pursue disruptive innovation can gain a major advantage over their rivals, while those that fail to do so risk exposing their countries to great danger.

Liked how the author pointed out how different military powers succeeded in preparing for the next war. The closing part of the book about how the US has no strategic focus was excellent.

Not your typical SOF book (in a great way)
Revisado: 05-22-24
Got this book after watching a clip on X. Thought it was going to be your typical SOF/military experiences book, but it was not. I enjoyed his honest and open discussion about his struggles, family issues and all the other non military struggles. I recommend this book to any person struggling with life issues outside of their military career.

As singular and strange as some of the weapons are, we learn that similar factors set their evolution in motion. He looks at everything from our armor and camouflage to the evolution of the rifle and the structures human populations have built across different regions and eras to protect their homes and communities.

Fun read

Enjoyed the book. Good tie-in’s between animal weapons and their sizes and how they change over time and the similarities to changes in military weapons over time. Good read.

Historia
While debates about border security continue to rage, and with stories about legal and illegal marijuana in the news daily, Hidden War forces an astonishing dose of reality into the public consciousness. California game warden Lt. John Nores, Jr., now retired, has been at the forefront of an under-reported battle against thousands of Mexican drug cartel members who grow toxic marijuana on US soil, frequently on public lands, and sometimes remarkably close to population centers. Who would guess that this struggle is even going on, or that game wardens are on the front lines?

Knew of illegal grows but didn’t know the extent till this book
Revisado: 11-16-23
The story was good, but what was more interesting is the impacts of illegal grows on both private and public lands that seem to be all tied to drug cartels from Mexico.

Historia
When we think about the future of war, the military and Washington and most everyone gets it backwards. We think in terms of buying single military systems, such as fighter jets or aircraft carriers. And when we think about modernizing those systems, we think about buying better versions of the same things. But what really matters is not the single system but "the battle network"—the collection of sensors and shooters that enables a military to find an enemy system, target it, and attack it.

Well worth the read/listen. Brings out excellent points about how our procurement processes need to change and how our military is lagging behind due to this.

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

It was OK
Revisado: 01-13-21
I read this because I really enjoyed Ghost Fleet, but this book was not as good. Ghost Fleet stayed pretty neutral politics wise and told a great story. This book had some interesting parts and made you think about where technology will take us in the future, however it had little political one liners throughout that were annoying and didn’t really add to the book. Felt like the authors were just trying to let everyone know where they stand politically with these one liners.
