The story was a little slow going at the beginning, but quickly picked up and turned into an excellent space wolves novel. The perfect balance between “wolf “aspects of the chapter and their Viking heritage, and once the story got rolling, it was an absolute bloodbath at times which is probably something every 40 K fan wants lots of. I highly recommend this book and I’m looking forward to the follow up, Stormcaller.

I know it’s 40 K and I’m not expecting high fiction but this along with the other books in this series have been little more than poorly written filler. It’s almost as if the author was just given a topic and some points to touch on but otherwise has no real working knowledge of Space marines, or the wolves chapter. A lot of the stuff that I guess is supposed to pass for humor comes off, overly juvenile and simplistic. I’m a big space wolves fan and I’m gonna read the stuff that covers their chapter, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend any of William King‘s books in this series.

There’s no real story here, more like the premise of “Bjorn needs a replacement for his missing hand” that provides no real context or establishment whatsoever. Suddenly, Bjorn gets what he needs and it’s over. Add to the fact that there’s combat sound effects and explosions / fighting at the same volume as the narrator making the content a busy, distracting mess. I’m glad I bought this on sale for $.99 as it’s barely worth bothering. Skip this!

It’s no secret. ADB can write a great 40 K story and I say this as a huge fan of his helsreach novel, but he outdid himself on this one. This book is absolutely fantastic from beginning to end with no dry spots or lulls or filler. An absolutely fantastic book and I dare say I could hand this off to someone with a little to know knowledge of the 40 K universe and they would be able to enjoy it as much as I did. Can’t recommend enough. And to say a word about the narrator, he might be my new favorite 40 K, he’s that good!

… A. D. B. Is such a great writer. It completely changed my opinion of Lorgar and the wordbearers, a chapter that I’ve always looked upon with disfavor having no real interest in as they were the progenitors of the heresy. Lorgar actually comes off as a very kind and tragic character who I found myself sympathizing with, no easy feat considering the devastation he and his bring into the galaxy and world of man. Excellent book and highly recommend.

Considering this part of the Horus Heresy is something of a misnomer. It takes place *during* the Horus heresy, w little sprinkles of what’s the come (eventually) but you’ve got to get a good 12 or 13 hours into the book before you actually have events that palpably affecting the greater story. I feel like this book would’ve greatly benefited from being edited down a few hours, and the author kept on path rather than just simply including page after page after page of exposition and narrative that served practically nothing.

The writing and narration are superb but the book really doesn’t have much of anything to do with the greater story being told in the Horus Heresy series. Read it for the writing but don’t expect much advancement of the overall narrative.

…by which all 40k books should be judged. The writing and dialogue, pacing, and especially the narration puts this book above and beyond any other 40K books in my opinion. Absolutely fantastic read!

I'll make this short and sweet and tothe point - I've read *all* of the Conan novels and short stories and this one was utterly unnecessary. You'd expect a Conan story to be filled with action and adventure and this tale was *beyond* bland and boring with little to no action until at least the halfway mark. Far, FAR too many musings about what Conan was thinking about someone's garb, pondering the food someone was eating, and there was no real central plot or significant villain, creature or obstacle to overcome other than a creepy obsession with finding Valeria who didnt have much interest in Conan to begin with. And the narrator - his normal speaking voice used for the exposition and narrative was fine but his voice used for Conan came off as cheesy and underwhelming and every female voice sounds like a bored/sleepy Jordan Peterson or Kermit the Frog. Do yourself a favor and go read the original R.E. Howard or Robert Jordan tales and skip this snoozer.

Everyone knows by now that a song of ice and fire has become a cultural phenomenon and is a fantastic story filled with incredible characters, engaging, and even heartbreaking storylines, and it’s a magnificent triumph of literature. That said, this narrator makes parts of the audio experienceimpossible to endure at times. He has his regular old man voice which she uses for the primary narration and pretty much half of the other character voices in this book is either an over exaggerated, cringeworthy accent (members of the same family or region often differ wildly) or a high-pitched almost screaming squeal that conjures a mental image of a little goblin being squished and shouting the lines after inhaling helium. It’s some of the worst overacting I have heard in an audiobook series and it’s taken everything I have to get through this. I read the books, the physical books, well before moving onto the audio versions, and I can’t help but feel that had I listened to the audio only, I wouldn’t have made it through the story and would have missed out on everything that, the full, unabridged, Game of Thrones experience has to offer.
