Historia
A rousing call to arms, packed with surprising insights, that explores how carrying "the mental load" - the thankless day-to-day anticipating of needs and solving of problems large and small - is adversely affecting women’s lives and feeding gender inequality, and shows the way forward for better balancing our lives.

Not for me
Revisado: 09-29-23
Listening to her go on and on about how bad her husband was got tedious. I wanted her to get to the point and say something useful but after two chapters of whining I was tired of waiting.

Historia
For the first 13 years of her life, Flor Edwards grew up in the Children of God. The group's nomadic existence was based on the belief that, as God's chosen people, they would be saved in the impending apocalypse that would envelop the rest of the world in 1993. Flor would be 13 years old. The group's charismatic leader, Father David, kept the family on the move, from Los Angeles to Bangkok to Chicago, where they would eventually disband, leaving Flor to make sense of the foreign world of mainstream society around her.

kind of boring
Revisado: 07-15-22
Maybe it is the VERY dry delivery of the reader, but this book put me to sleep. The details of Flo's life aren't put together in any interesting way. It is like listening to someone recite facts.

Vicky knew and maintained friendship??
Revisado: 12-10-21
This episode was a little bit hard to stomach. If I'm following the timeline correctly Vicky knew about the sexual assault committed by Jeff in the company of Ghislaine and yet she maintained a friendship with her and went to her dinner parties and made plans to fly with her to an event. It is a little difficult to take her seriously when she tries to advocate for the victims when clearly she didn't care at the time.

Historia
Sonora Carver (1904-2003) was a circus entertainer and one of the first female horse divers. In the arresting autobiography A Girl and Five Brave Horses, Sonora tells her life story. Her sensational act was mounting a running horse as it reached the top of a 40-foot or 60-foot tower and sailing down on its back as it plunged into an 11-foot pool of water below. In 1931, she was blinded due to hitting the water off balance with open eyes while diving her horse. After the accident, she continued to dive horses until 1942.

Great book, disappointing reading.
Revisado: 07-29-21
This book is fascinating. Sonora's life was very unique.
I had a really hard time with this reader. Sonora wrote this book in the first person. She is from Georgia. This reader has a Scottish (I think) accent. That disconnect is off-putting. It wouldn't be that bad if the reader had taken the time to learn how to pronounce things like "Yosemite" and "Waco." If you're a professional speaker, learn how to pronounce place names. The reader also always sounds irritated. Like she is impatiently telling me this story.
Whoever edited this also didn't cut out all the multiple takes. At times the reader would say something then immediately repeat it, clearly a second take. Other times I could hear other people chatting in the background. Seeing such a wonderful story produced with such a lack of care is frustrating.

I love this book! I read it when I was young and decided to revisit it as an adult through this recording. As always Jenny is a delight. I love to hear her read. I imagined the book was being read to me by an older Catherine!

Man, stop writing female protagonists please
Revisado: 02-10-21
This book is awful. It is a coming of age story about a girl/woman that was DEFINITELY written by a man who did not consult a single woman while writing it. The main character serves as a vehicle for the author's condescension and hate of women. He uses rape as a plot point without bothering to look into how rape survivors feel after their experience or using it for any meaningful discourse. Rape is used to shock the reader as cheaply and shallowly as possible. Every character is not only unlikable, they are terrible with no purpose. If you're going to write a book filled with unredeemable characters, at least use them to say something interesting. Not just to scratch your itch for body shaming and condescension towards women. One of the worst books I have ever read.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-18-20
As a fan of The Hunger Games I was really looking forward to more good storytelling from Collins. This ain't it. The choices made by the characters are completely nonsensical at every turn. There is no character development beyond dry explanations of personality traits explained by inner monologue rather than characters' actions. The concept of the world is really great but everything else about it is just disappointing

Oof. Skip this one.
Revisado: 07-10-20
Howl's Moving Castle is by no means a feminist book. However, Castle in the Air takes the misogyny to a new level. It also spends half a chapter waxing poetic about how fat two women are (these women never get names. they are only referred to as "the Fat Brides.") Most of the tale is pulled from the Arabian Nights story and many racist tropes are heavily leaned on. This is an extremely disappointing sequel to one of my favorite books.
