Terrible
Revisado: 12-12-24
How did the author of the great Sean Duffy series and the pretty good Michael O'Rourke trilogy manage to produce this overcooked garbage?

Not for me

I quickly realized that I don't know enough about French literature to undersand most of the jokes. Hope to just return this.

Perfectly.... AWFUL!
Revisado: 10-19-15
I thought this book was perfectly awful. Sentence after sentence after interminable flat sentence had phrases along the lines of "He might have thought" or "Maybe it was really" and so on. And this was the author describing a person's direct thoughts! Few dramatic events actual happen directly; we just get some observer telling another character second hand what he or she had seen or heard Salander or Blomkvist do or say, was told what they had done or said, or surmised that they had done or said. I suppose I deserved the punishment of pursuing this overhyped drivel all the way to the end, but I can't really blame anyone else. This is one of those rare books of which the movie will be better. Because it could not be worse. The mediocre reading is the book's high point.

Historia
Detective Esa Khattak is in the midst of his evening prayers when he receives a phone call asking that he and his partner Detective Rachel Getty look into the death of a local man who has fallen off a cliff. At first Christopher Drayton's death - which looks like an accident - doesn't seem to warrant a police investigation, especially not from Khattak and Rachel's team, which handles minority-sensitive cases.

Keeps alive a memory the west may prefer to forget
Revisado: 02-03-15
Khan's excellent debut novel goads one's conscience as it follows a new "odd couple" of investigators who I think could have a great future, based on the evidence here. Is the death they investigate a murder, suicide, or accident? She keeps you guessing, with skill and subtlety, telling a compelling story of brutality, loss, complicity, betrayal, vengeance and the elusiveness of justice. The backdrop is a crime of which few but the victims can claim total innocence--the Srebrenica genocide, the worst massacre in Europe since World War II. The narrator is competent and nuanced but I think a female voice might be a better choice. And in the next book, she should have Rachel actually playing hockey, not just being on her way to or from the rink.

Historia
Pepper is a rambunctious big man, and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He's not mentally ill, but that doesn't seem to matter. On his first night, he's visited by a terrifying creature who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It's no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper rallies three other inmates in a plot to fight back: Dorry, an octogenarian schizophrenic; Coffee, an African immigrant with severe OCD; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl.

Boring
Revisado: 11-06-12
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I found this book incredibly boring. It just plods along. Also, more evidence that authors should not read their own work, though a good reader would not have salvaged it.
Has The Devil in Silver turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
