Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Great story, awful narration
Revisado: 10-28-24
The story is gripping and a good historical view of the period. The narration is too breathless and gets in the way of the tale. Moreover, the narrator is American and makes no attempt to explore the rich possibilities of the many accents and language of the diverse class, social and educational differences of the people in the book. The performance was incredibly disappointing in light of the quality of the story and writing.

Historia
At MI5 headquarters Regent's Park, First Desk Claude Whelan is learning the rule (cover your arse) the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he's facing attack from all directions himself. Over at Slough House, the MI5 satellite office for outcast and demoted spies, the agents are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. Plus someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho.

The performance is outstanding
Revisado: 02-06-24
This series is difficult to review. I can’t tell whether the writing is as great as it seems or that the performance lifts it to such a high level. Excellent in all categories

Historia
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Herron’s writing is sublime, the story engrossing, and the performance outstanding. I wish there were more stars available for the rating.

Historia
The leaders of the free world descend on Scotland for an international conference, and every cop in the country is needed for front-line duty - except one. John Rebus' reputation precedes him, and his bosses don't want him anywhere near Presidents Bush and Putin, which explains why he's manning an abandoned police station when a call comes in. During a preconference dinner at Edinburgh Castle, a delegate has fallen to his death. Accident, suicide, or something altogether more sinister?

Historia
The polluted waters of the canals in Venice are an ever-present issue; but environmental concerns become significant in Commissario Guido Brunetti's work when an investigator from the Carabiniere—looking into the illegal hauling of garbage—asks for a favor. But the investigator is not the only one with a special request. Brunetti's father-in-law needs help and a mysterious woman comes into the picture. And the Commissario soon finds himself in the middle of an investigation into murder and corruption more dangerous than anything he's seen before.

Historia
On a cold Venetian night, shortly before Christmas, a street vendor is killed in a scuffle in Campo San Stefano. The closest witnesses are the tourists who had been browsing the man's wares: fake handbags of every designer label. The dead man had been working as a vu cumpra, one of the many African immigrants purveying goods outside normal shop hours and without work permits. Commissario Brunetti's response is that of everybody involved: why would anyone kill an illegal immigrant?

Better than others
Revisado: 08-23-23
I’ve listened to about a dozen of these books by Leon. This one has a bit more tension, a bit more excitement and a bit too much “mother knows best”. David Collaci’s reading, usually excellent, seems to be drifting into Russian accents instead of Italian but the timbre of his voice makes up for it.
If you are looking for a non-challenging listen with interesting insights into northern Italian life, food, and attitudes toward everything non- Venetian then I can recommend it.

Historia
Mystery lovers everywhere are addicted to Donna Leon's ever-honorable Commissario Guido Brunetti and her portrayal of Venice's beautiful but sinister byways and canals. In Willful Behavior, Brunetti is approached for a favor by one of his wife's students. Intelligent and serious, Claudia Leonardo asks for his help in obtaining a pardon for a crime once committed by her now-dead grandfather.

Bad choice of performer
Revisado: 08-11-23
The story is what one expects from this author, fairly simple plot line, light character development, all in all a B- or C+ of a book. The performance is a great disappointment. The class accents are sorely misplaced and the mispronunciations are unforgivable. I wonder how the director allowed it. I don’t recommend this audiobook.

Historia
In Friends in High Places, Commissario Guido Brunetti is visited by a young bureaucrat investigating the lack of approval for the construction of Brunetti's apartment years before. What began as a red-tape headache ends in murder when the bureaucrat is later found dead after a mysterious fall from a scaffold. Brunetti starts an investigation that will take him into the unfamiliar and dangerous areas of drug abuse and loan-sharking, and will reveal, once again, what a difference it makes in Venice to have friends in high places.

Easy listen with an unsatisfactory ending
Revisado: 07-10-23
If you like a slow moving story that isn’t too complicated this is mostly good. There isn’t a lot of action but there is a lot of description and the main character, Brunetti, is very likable. Also her representation of Italians’ overarching cynicism regarding all things governmental is sometimes charming and mostly infuriating, but so much a part of real life in Italy. The narrator does a good job. In summary, it’s not Ian Rankin or Louise Penny but good enough.

Historia
In a small back alley of Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than 100 years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee - the chance to travel back in time. Over the course of one summer, four customers visit the café in the hopes of making that journey. But time travel isn’t so simple, and there are rules that must be followed. Most important, the trip can last only as long as it takes for the coffee to get cold.

Not sure
Revisado: 03-08-23
It’s hard to say whether my dissatisfaction is the result of a too literal translation or a poorly written story. The main conceit could be interesting and each chapter could have been good stories but they somehow left me waiting for something more.
