What a rollercoaster of a ride rollicking through Revolutionary times. Felt like I was there...totally immersed. - John B. Ward We admire and salute great patriotism. - E. Ramos "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Nathan Hale - New York City - September 22, 1776 In September 1776, the mighty war machine of the British Empire surrounded George Washington and his ragtag Continental Army on Manhattan Island. If the British prevail, Washington might well hang for treason. Desperate for information, he calls for an officer to venture behind enemy lines. Captain Nathan ...

I will never order an audiobook with virtual speak again. Not only was it monotone, but words that are spelled alike were pronounced wrong. I wish I could give the performance a negative number. I don't know whether or not the book was good. I gave three stars to the book based on the reviews of the book club members, who felt it was okay but leaned toward fiction. They said the book has information and maps in the back.

Good Book, Great Reader
Revisado: 01-02-22
I am very picky about the readers and found Kate Reading exceptional. She's articulate and doesn't overplay the male voices. The story reminded me of an old-fashioned mystery, with enough twists and turns to keep me interested. I liked it and recommend it as light listening.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

spoiler alert
Revisado: 02-27-20
what I have to say may give you an unintended spoiler. I can't really write my review without disclosing some things.
I would have given it 5 stars.
To begin with, the reader was excellent and I'll look for other books she's read. I was personally too sensitive for parts of the book.
*********************spoiler*****************************
The story was interesting and the basic plot and character developments were excellent. but toward the end, it was way too graphic for me. It may not be for everyone.
I could handle everything that the older sister endured. What happened in France was horrible.
The younger sister's story was even more interesting but what happened to her toward the end of the book was too much for me.
I know I am sensitive, but I actually had real nightmares and now I can't get it out of my mind.
I've visited museums and Dachau when I was in Germany. I also had the privilege of hearing one of the Auschwitz prisoners speak. Although no one can really understand the horror firsthand, In my head I'm familiar with how the prisoners were treated. I have no doubt that everything in the book was accurate,
I was just much to sensitive to read so much of the torture she went through. I skipped through some of it.

Historia
Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a 19-year-old waitress as his passenger.

boring
Revisado: 12-29-19
This book was just ok. Light reading with unlikeable characters who stumbled through the story. The end was as predictable and campy. The only reason I listened to the entire book was because it was a book club selection. Out of seven members, four couldn't get even halfway though. Three of us finished the book. Two of us listened on Audible and one read it.

the sound was off. I didn't finish
Revisado: 11-29-19
I couldn't get past the audio. I'm not sure if it was the narrator or the equipment used to record it. I tried to listen on my phone, I pad and computer, with and without headphones. The female voice would speed up and all the male sounding voices were very slow and fake sounding. I was looking forward to this book and will buy the hard copy.

monotone.
Revisado: 10-05-19
The book was ok and probably has some good information but the narrator had a very monotone voice and I tended to drift away from the book.
