Historia
In the near future, when America has become a police state, 100 boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life. Among them is 16-year-old Ray Garraty, and he knows the rules - keep a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings and you're out - permanently.

Great stripped-down, character-driven dystopian
Revisado: 05-01-24
I loved this early novel. No fantasy or magical elements (which, while he doesn't conform to genre, only King and a handful of others can convince me to love) just a straightforward dystopian premise with incredible character development and emotion. I heard a journalist in a recent retrospective of his work describe this book as a kind of proto Hunger Games. That rings true, but this is far better in my opinion. This is now among my favorite King novels together with Pet Sematary and The Stand.

Relatable and profound
Revisado: 12-24-22
I loved her story and related to it so much. I have the kind of “invisible” (for the moment) crohn’s that causes me a lot of pain, money, sleep, shame, and worry, but that other people can’t usually see. It was so meaningful for me to hear this experience reflected. The way she wrote about grieving your body as a young person who has just learned that you’ll never get better really helped me understand my experience. I’m lucky in many ways, and that has sometimes made me feel guilty about all the ways I’m angry at my diagnosis. And to everyone saying she “didn’t need to get political” about the American healthcare system . . . grow up, and listen.
Thank you for this book!

Petty
Revisado: 11-05-22
The name dropping and the bizarre fixation on who slept with him and who slighted him. I thought this was a recovery memoir, and the parts about addiction are insightful and I feel for him, but too often it read like a list of grievances, most of which seemed pretty unfair.

Historia
Candace Chen, a millennial drone self-sequestered in a Manhattan office tower, is devoted to routine. With the recent passing of her Chinese immigrant parents, she’s had her fill of uncertainty. She’s content just to carry on: She goes to work, troubleshoots the teen-targeted Gemstone Bible, watches movies in a Greenpoint basement with her boyfriend. So Candace barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps New York.

Fantastic narration
Revisado: 03-24-20
Wonderful narrator she inhabits the character so convincingly. It’s hard to pace fiction well on audiobook and this one is perfect.
