Historia
In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Great story old voice
Revisado: 03-11-21
I’m sorry Suzanne. You sound like an old lady like me! The main characters are 35 and 39 yet they sound like old ladies. All the characters sound old, men included. I apologize for being agist but if you are going to act out a book your voice should fit the part. I found this annoying and the sound effects , like a tinny voice on a phone, or Peanut’s booming voice, jarring and disruptive. The story was beautiful and beautifully written. I sobbed as I listened to the ending. With the exception of one evil doer there were helping, loving people everywhere.

Historia
Working as a dedicated forensic psychiatrist for many years, Emma is not shocked so easily. Then she is assigned to work with Connie, a wife and mother accused of a despicable crime. Connie is suffering from dissociative amnesia - or at least seems to be. Now it is up to Emma to decide whether Connie can stand trial for her sins. But there is something about Connie that inexorably pulls Emma into her orbit. Too Close is a masterfully written riveting listen about the powerful - yet dangerous - closeness between women.

Hilarious and heartbreaking

I identified with the caustic sarcasm of Connie. She is a treasure. This story kept me glued to my seat from start to finish. Very smart.

Historia
It's early one morning on a hot day in August, and millennial congressman Alexander Paine Wilson (R), planning his first reelection campaign and in deep denial about his sexuality, receives a mysterious, over-sized FedEx delivery on his front stoop. Inside is a gigantic taxidermied aardvark. This outrageous, edge-of-your-seat novel hurtles between contemporary Washington, DC, where Wilson tries to get rid of the unsightly beast before it destroys his career, and Victorian England - where we meet Titus Downing, the taxidermist who stuffed the aardvark....

Who thinks of this stuff?
Revisado: 01-31-21
What a strange book. I like when authors blow my mind. I like new and clever things. Not a comedy but very funny. Taxidermy in the time of Darwin, a stuffed aardvark stolen from Namibia with compelling baby blue eyes - purchased by Heinrich Himler for his son then, present day, a closeted congressman with an obsession with Ronald Reagan. So hard to describe...try it. You are going to love it. I would love to have a friend who thinks like the author.

Too young for me
Revisado: 01-02-21
It’s hard to find relevant books when you are my age, 64. This is best for 40 something. Toddler triplets vomiting in the car just don’t interest me. Been there, done that. I enjoyed the fashion and creation of wedding dresses. I did not enjoy divorce, cheating husbands, monster future mothers in law. Rachel’s narrator spoke slowly and bored me —the whining! Xe was fabulous as the narrator for Jenny. The book was trite. Almost returned it but I needed a read that would give me some escape from our Covid existence. I find any book Xe performs elevated well beyond its words.

Historia
Two blood-spattered strangers awake, locked in the trunk of a car - with a murdered cop and the smoking gun. Aside from raging headaches and no idea what's happened, they appear to have nothing in common. Troy thinks it's 2001 and he's still a combat surgeon fighting terrorists in Afghanistan. Emmy believes it's 2002 and she's still grifting a living from the streets of L.A.

Fun read
Revisado: 03-16-20
I enjoyed the book but not the reader. Sorry but he sounds way too old for a 38 year old and does not do women’s voices very well at all. It’s an original, clever plot. I’m anxious to see what happens to this dynamic new duo next.

Historia
Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho in a seductive and sinister debut literary thriller. Food critic Dorothy Daniels indulges in her homicidal urges by murdering her lovers and devouring their organs in this intense, visceral, and lushly told tale of food, sex, power, and the pursuit of a very particular taste set between New York and Italy. Please Note: A Certain Hunger contains adult language and depictions of violence. Discretion is advised.

Brilliant and insightful author
Revisado: 03-09-20
Helen Hubor is by far my favorite reader/performer. And she does not disappoint here. The story itself is shocking, disgusting, and not for the faint of heart. With the description of sex you’d think the author was a man. The vulgarity shocked me and I laughed and loved it. The narrator star of the book is the worst person ever! I love her. I learned so much about food, butchery, society, norms and perversions. More! More. I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next. Definitely a mind blower. Not for sweet people who don’t enjoy a bit of shock . Apparently I do, very much.

Implausible
Revisado: 02-27-19
A collision between a lot of characters behaving badly for 20 years, just too hard to believe . Oblivious law enforcement, silence and complicity among different factions, I mean one family might keep a lie but more than that is too much.

Historia
An utterly unsentimental journey toward the end of life, Mala is an irreverent exploration of how we live, cope, and survive in the moment. Grounded in Lopez’s distinctive emotional language and sharp humor, this powerful one-woman show dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a daughter’s quest for grace - all set during an epic Boston winter. Rather than depict a “right way”, the play opens the door for our universal struggle to support those we love in dying, especially when all we’ve ever focused on is surviving.

Revisado: 02-14-19
Melinda captures the essence of the stunning experience of ushering our parents out of the world. I thought I was over it and I’ve moved on but it was cathartic to hear her words. What a performance! I’m excited to see that she has written more.
Life goes on. Thanks Melinda.

Beekeepers’ delight
Revisado: 06-16-18
Beekeepers and laypeople alike will marvel at the author’s ability to humanize the bees. Every scientific fact that I have learned through my beekeeping is an important part of the story of Flora and the hive. Very interesting. Not your normal book. I really enjoyed this.
