Historia
Billy Halleck commits vehicular manslaughter when his lack of attention results in the death of an old gypsy lady on the street. Overweight Halleck is a lawyer with connections, though, and he gets off with a slap on the wrist. After the trial, the victim's ancient father curses him with a single word: "thinner". Shedding weight by the week, Halleck is desperate enough for one last gamble...one that will lead him to a nightmare showdown with the forces of evil melting his flesh away.

filled with great advice
Revisado: 06-11-18
I've witnessed and survived a ton of violence in my life and found the descriptions and theories in this book are more accurate than anything I've seen before. This is filled with such great advice, much of which I had to learn the hard way. This guy actually gets how violence works and offers practical, straight-forward ways to deal with it. And he does a fantastic job of explaining why criminal justice and the popular way we look at crime is actually making things worse.

Historia
Critics have called her “sweet, adorable, and vicious.” But there is so much more to be said about Samantha Bee. For one, she’s Canadian - whatever that means. And now, she opens up for the very first time about her checkered Canadian past. With charming candor, she admits to her Lennie from Of Mice and Men-style love of baby animals, her teenage crime spree as one-half of a car-thieving couple, and the fact that strangers seem compelled to show her their genitals.

Historia
Precociously intelligent, imaginative, energetic, and ambitious, Marya Hornbacher grew up in a comfortable middle-class American home. At the age of 5, she returned home from ballet class one day, put on an enormous sweater, curled up on her bed, and cried because she thought she was fat. By age 9, she was secretly bulimic, throwing up at home after school, while watching Brady Bunch reruns on television and munching Fritos. She added anorexia to her repertoire a few years later and took great pride in her ability to starve. Marya's story gathers intensity with each passing year. By the time she is in college and working for a wire news service in Washington D.C., she is in the grip of a bout of anorexia so horrifying that it will forever put to rest the romance of wasting away. Down to 52 pounds and counting, Marya becomes a battlefield: her powerful death instinct at war with the will to live. Why would a talented young girl go through the looking glass and slip into a netherworld where up is down, food is greed, and death is honor? Why enter into a love affair with hunger, drugs, sex, and death? Marya Hornbacher sustained both anorexia and bulimia through 5 lengthy hospitalizations, endless therapy, the loss of family, friends, jobs, and ultimately, any sense of what it means to be "normal." In this vivid, emotionally wrenching memoir, she recreates the experience and illuminates the tangle of personal, family, and cultural causes underlying eating disorders.

disturbingly vivid
Revisado: 03-12-18
incredibly vivid portrayal of what it actually feels like to have a serious eating disorder. it doesn't offer any science on the topic or solutions though. you might want to skip this one if you have a weak stomach but it may really help you to understand if you have a loved one going through this.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

character made no sense
Revisado: 01-04-18
I found the main character totally ubelievable. her motivation made no sense. she was a career criminal, a really terrible person with no respect for her community and no remorse, but she is portrayed as a good person despite all the selfish, disrespectful and dangerous things she does. That's probably why he made her female. Easier for the reader to look the other way. It never explains how she came to be this way. It seems clear the author did not study criminal behavior before writing this.

unique perspectives on success and ethics
Revisado: 01-01-18
At first i thought this was going to just be another motivational speech from an amped up coach and a lot if it was just that but it wound up having some interesting perspectives on success and motivation. I was particularly impressed with how he repeatedly wove ethics and moral behavior into the mix, almost making it central, as opposed to most other wealth books that ignore it.

good advice but kind of hateful
Revisado: 12-30-17
This had lots of good advice but i do not understand the authors deep hatred of drug users. He is open about the fact that he has more compassion for registered sex offenders than pot smokers or even reformed former drug users. As a responsible pot smoker and former dealer I found this very off-putting and wonder what other advice he is giving based on stereotypes instead of real data.

good but very outdated
Revisado: 12-24-17
Note the publication date of 1993. I didn't notice that. This book talks about letterhead, fax machines, polaroids and typewriters, suggests utilizing the rapidly expanding UHF television stations, and recommends watching The Simpson's to keep up with modern times. More than an hour of this book is just a list of 1990s magazines and newspapers with their mailing addresses. Why even sell this book when there is an updated 2008 version? There were a lot of stories of PR stunts and ideas that were pretty interesting though.
