There are many books for learning Chinese. There are books that can teach you survival phrases or the first 300 characters, but I have yet to come across a book that teaches you everything you need to know to master the language through self-study. I know this because I bought so many Chinese learning books years ago, and while some were a bit helpful for starting out, none of them taught me step by step what I needed to do to truly master the language. The HSK books by the Confucius Institute are phenomenal and I am a big fan of them, but even they do not tell you HOW to study... Many ...

Good book, bad presentation
Revisado: 03-26-25
Very sound advice on learning Mandarin, but the electronic voice does not speak proper Chinese and is basically useless. This book deserves to be recorded with the right pronunciation of the language it is purportedly teaching.

Opens our minds to new possibilities for human cultures
Revisado: 03-31-24
For several generations now, our standard education taught that societies progressed from nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes to more complex civilizations up to today. There is so much more to the story as this book so aptly lays out. Without resorting to a utopian past, the authors describe many ways people have formed communities, cities and civilizations. Just because we have patriarchy, nationalism and state rule today does not mean this is inevitable. Or even desirable. Our history is complex and the research and discoveries made over the last several decades have uncovered many ways humans have lived together, stories about our past that colonialism and religious bigotry sought to erase. Agree or disagree, this book provides some very interesting ideas about the spectrum of possibilities we have if we only put our minds to it.

The piano is the most popular solo concert instrument in Western music. One of the key reasons is the fact that it has inspired many of the greatest masterpieces in the concert repertoire. To study these masterworks and to understand their genius and lasting appeal is to know one of the greatest accomplishments of Western culture, works that give great pleasure even as they deepen your insight into the meaning of music.

A pleasurable and educational experience
Revisado: 12-18-22
Robert Greenberg has put together a treasure of music that takes us through the history of the piano and western music. He covers the technical aspects of the compositions from the perspectives of both the composers and pianists, and ties them seamlessly into the artistic expression of the music itself. On top of that he presents a very personal view of the composers' lives and the historical times in which they each were living. My father was a composer of (very) "avant-garde" music back in his day when he taught at CU and after his retirement. This course has given me a new appreciation of his work. I could see where he got his inspiration and how his work fits in with other 20th century composers. For that I am grateful, Robert. If you enjoy classical piano music and knowing the history of music, I highly recommend this course!
