Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Protagonist’s imaginings of killings were unbelievable and overdone. Would have enjoyed richer language and characters with less repetitive filler.

Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job. Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job isn't like the others. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes—especially after what happened last time.

Wanted to love it more
Revisado: 05-02-24
For a title so high on the charts, I may have expected too much.
The book is good — not great. No regrets for the time I spent listening…but no compelling drive to say “you have got to read/listen to this”. Do you get what I’m saying?

Imagine two worlds at war. In one, citizens with jetpacks and ray guns have colonized Venus. In the other, magic reigns supreme, and history turns on swords and spells. Now imagine they have just discovered a third world. Our world. Our timeline of rideshare apps and strip malls is about to become the newest battlefield in the long war between science fiction and fantasy.

Sadly, I found this too painful to complete
Revisado: 08-21-21
If only the story lived up to the production value. The convoluted tale jumps around so much that it fails to develop any forward momentum. I stuck with it for 4 1/2 hours then could take no more. It is very episodic with overblown characters that are more caricatures. Nothing subtle or nuanced about it. There are no highs or lows — simply a collection of scenes all played at the same emotional level and pace. Writing is overwrought in an effort to be clever. I cringed more than smiled or laughed. (I’m a huge SFF fan, so I’m saddened that I was unable to connect with this production.)

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of carrying only opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - what percentage of the world's population live in poverty; why the world's population is increasing; how many girls finish school - we systematically get the answers wrong. In Factfulness, professor of international health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two longtime collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens.

Painful to listen to
Revisado: 01-20-20
This is an article s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out into a plodding book that uses some dodgy logic in trying to make points. Only made it through chapter two -- which seemed an endless listen in itself

Whether you are a scientist or a poet, pro-nuclear energy or staunch opponent, conspiracy theorist or pragmatist, James Mahaffey's books have served to open up the world of nuclear science like never before. With clear explanations of some of the most complex scientific endeavors in history, Mahaffey's new book looks back at the atom's wild, secretive past and then toward its potentially bright future.

Interesting - but there's better NF out there
Revisado: 05-29-18
While I started the book wanting very much to like it, I was repeatedly disappointed by its inability to rise to the level of other nonfiction titles I've listened to recently. I'm not sure if it was due to the lack of forward momentum or diversity of voices or personal disinterest in the topic. Granted, there are some wonderful nuggets within the text - but they are too few and far between for me to highly recomment this text to other listeners.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

YA book with universal appeal
Revisado: 05-29-18
This book tackles issues of race in a manner that is refreshingly frank, balanced and engaging. The characters are all multi-demensional, the situations nuanced and complex, and the actions all shaded in grey instead of being cliches in black and white. Overall, I loved the voice of the characters and was drawn into the situations and conflicts. Highly recommended - particularly for YA audiences...but adults too who think they 'know' what/how young people today think.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost. The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Very fIne, but not exceptional, SF&F series
Revisado: 05-29-18
The series is an impressive accomplishment. A very fine effort -- one that is rare, but not fine enough to compare to Tolkien or other geniuses at world-building. Rich in characters, settings and lore, it provided an engaging listen from beginning to end -- so my critique may be a bit harsh. Sanderson is an author I will watch closely in the future.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Harrowing but not revelatory
Revisado: 05-29-18
The author's accomplishments are inspiring in light of all that she was up against. The accounts of her upbringing are eye-opening - often difficult to imagine. However, the telling felt more like a news report than a story. What was learned? How did the author change? What should I, as the reader, take away from this book? I left saddened by the terrible trials the author had been through but wanting some greater insight. How do we keep what happened to Westover from happening to other young people? In finishing the book, I felt saddened and unfullfilled. While I wanted to recommend the book as an example of the persistence or resolve of the human spirit, I felt the scope of empathy was too narrowly cast on the author with too little compassion for other who might be facing similar odds and too lazy to offer solutions or hope for addressing similar situations.

Hoping to discover some wit and sophitication that might have eluded me on the web, I was disappointed to discover that the book reflected the low bar that embraces new talent and humor these days. The self indulgence is a bit boring and the humor a bit too ordinary for me -- but I'm sure that there are others who will find delight in this (as other reviews clearly indicate).

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.
