Rather boring

The story starts in a promising manner with Elizabeth discovering Mr Darcy in her sitting room at Netherfield. It is night and he is hiding from Miss Bingley's marked attentions. They talk at length although, if discovered, they might be forced to marry. In spite of the promising beginning, the rest of the story is pretty boring. Everybody is amazing: Jane is beautiful and very strong, Lizzy is beautiful and wise, Mary is as beautiful as Jane, Charlotte is beautiful and very passionate, Mrs Bennet is brave and wise, etc. The same goes for the men. Only Miss Bingley and Wickham are horrid but they get their comeuppance. With so many great and amazing individuals in the cast of characters it is hard to find a center of interest.

Normally, variations involving compromise and forced marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy are romantic. Not this one.

Implausible but entertaining

Many things happen in this variation and most defy common sense. The thing that vexed me most was the contradiction between Darcy publicly announcing his courtship to a woman he believed was not someone he could marry because of fear of public opinion. In spite of this, and other implausible things, the story moved fast and was rather fun to read.

What is the moral of the tale?

It is a moralistic tale with unrealistically brilliant female characters- accomplished and secretly rich. Unfortunately, I could not make out the moral of the tale. Apart from this, my main peeve is the flattening of the characters: there is just one personality shared by Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, and Charlotte to such an extent that it is difficult to distinguish among them. I usually do not mind the computer-generated voice, but in this case, I found it irritating.

Many unexpected and not particularly realistic things happen in quick succession, making the story pleasant to read with the right amount of angst, romance, and righteous gloating at the fate of the villains. The Virtual Voice sounds fairly natural. If it were not for some misuse of pronouns, I would have nothing to complain about.

Morally unsound

SPOILER warning.
This Elizabeth is a rather compulsive liar and Mr Darcy is a wimp. She withholds from him very important information about herself and is found out, after they marry, in the most embarrassing manner bringing great humiliation upon Darcy’s head. She is punished, but somehow everyone, including herself, considers that Darcy is at fault while Elizabeth is not to be blamed. In spite of this, the story is not too bad, quite readable actually although it lacks romance.

Engaging story

It is quite an engaging story with many new characters. Maybe a little too many new characters and side stories. It is the first time when I enjoyed the epilogue. The virtual voice reading is surprisingly natural.

Poor Darcy

I am generally not fond of variations figuring an unpleasant Darcy. The Darcy character in this book is unique and not in any good way. At first, I could not find an apt description- rude, boorish, churlish, arrogant, conceited? And then, it came to me. This is the first stupid and incompetent Darcy character I've ever met!

Group adventure and romance

There are no individual heroes in this story- it is all group work. The heroes consist of a group of wonderful, beautiful females and a group of handsome, brave, powerful, and (most of them) very rich men. They fight a group of insane criminals. The heroes should, if narrative requirements did not forbid it, destroy the villains, yet they keep procrastinating thus enabling the villains to enact their villainous schemes. Romance is announced (repeatedly), but there is little emotion. The language feels mechanical. Yet, despite all the faults, the overall story is fairly gripping and the Virtual Voice sounds much more natural than I would have expected.
