I cannot express enough how much I loved this book! It has it all…a beautiful love story, with heartbreak, drama and mystery, then add in the magic and then another mystery or three shrouded in betrayal!

In the Shadow Garden is an easy read, or listen. It’s packed with enough details to keep you guessing. I thought I knew what was happening, and then I didn’t. I love that in a story. The witch in me loves the magic involved, and who doesn’t love a happy ending?!?

With multiple narrators, the audiobook is much more intriguing than most I have listened to, and it helps you immerse yourself into the characters, their feelings, thoughts, and emotions. I cried more than once!

Each story has a slightly different backstory for the couple involved, but beyond that each story is almost exactly the same.

I read this book with an open mind, at first. It was recommended by someone who claims to be an ally to the LGBTQIA community. This compilation quickly became a trash pile. Little things bothered me. Her comment that "Pan is the new bi" may seem small to most, but it isn't the same and immediately tells a reader that she dismisses the language of the LGBTQIA community. Remarks such as this, and numerous others, led me an early conclusion that she didn't actually research. With apprehension, I finished the book. She would pick and choose the information that confirmed the narrative she was looking to convey. Abigail Shrier had an agenda with this book. She continuously compares "the transgender craze" to anorexia as a teenager. It's just a phase for girls that feel the need to change their bodies to fit in. She interviews parents who say their "daughter" didn't show signs of gender dysphoria prior to teenage/high school/college years, therefore they (the parents) know this isn't real. They (the parents) know this is just a phase. Questions... for Abigail. Did teens with anorexia show signs prior to their teenage/high school/college years? And do most people who went through eating disorders as teen deal with body dysmorphia well into adulthood, if not their entire lives? Not the point, I know, because it doesn't further the agenda of this book.

The agenda seems to be that parents know best, no matter what age a person is, especially if that person was born with female genitalia. She expresses to her readers that gender affirming therapy is wrong, a parent should not adhere to using chosen names or pronouns, and that adolescent (ages 10-19, but for the sake of this book mostly 15-19) children should do only as their parents wish. They are the parent after all, and parents always know best. She condemns parents that affirm their teen and early adult's transition, or their wish to. She condemns transgenders (namely female to male transitioning) as a phase that the person will regret later in life. She incessantly brings up that therapist are asking parents if they would rather have a dead daughter or a living son, and that this furthers the "craze" by guilting parents into accepting their child. What she did not bring up is the number of parents who will kick a child out on the street, and here I am talking about a child (i.e. 13 years old) if they express being a member of the LGBTQIA community. Instead, she referred to the boundaries that an adolescent or young woman would set (not in these words, of course) and how parents should not adhere to those boundaries. I could go on and on as to how harmful this book is, but it would almost require a book of my own, rebutting damn near every sentence.

As my title of this review states, this book is damaging, at best. It is harmful not only to trans teens/young adults, but to the their blood family and the community as a whole. It further divides the generations on so many issues. I wouldn't be surprised if this journalist turns up in right winged politics in the very near future, and is absolutely in favor of anti-women, trans, and BIPOC rights.

I felt the need to write this review due to all of the negative reviews. Please read…….if you don’t want to be GREAT, if you are fine being a FOLLOWER, if just getting through life is okay with you, DO NOT waste your time on this book. You won’t get it, and it will just make you angry.

HOWEVER

It doesn't matter if you are in business for yourself, trying to excel in your current profession, trying to be a high level athlete, or just trying to live the best life you can, this is a great book that puts so many things into perspective. Depending on who you are, you either “get it” or you don’t. But if you do “get it,” this is a WONDERFUL, MUST READ!!

This book was recommended to me by my mentor. It is one of the most important books I have in my personal library. It brought me back to where I needed to be mentally. It opened my mind to the thought that it is okay to be THE BEST. Tim also talks about the fact that one cannot be The Best at every single aspect of their life. You must be willing to sacrifice. His experience is with athletes and what they sacrificed. Open your mind. The things those athletes gave up, may not be what you need to give up, but you will sacrifice if you want to be GREAT!

Some of us are born Cleaners (read the book, you’ll get the term), some people aren’t. And that’s okay. We have leaders, and we have people that need or want to be led. Being led is not always a bad thing. Different personalities are what make the world go round. Tim Grover, however, is not talking about people who aren’t leaders. If you can’t fathom being the person that everyone looks up to, do not read this book. BUT...if you are a leader, aim to be the best, want to succeed at the highest level, I recommend this book above all others.

This was long enough to get some great info from, but not so long that I couldn't finish it. Definitely a great listen!
