Poor Narration
Revisado: 04-29-25
Narration is flat, stilted and, lacks any attempt to differentiate between characters. This narrator almost ruins the story!

subpar narration

Dick Hill did a better job narrating the first book. Michael doesn't do nearly as well here (he speaks too slow and mispronounces a number of the German words).

Historia
Humanity pushed its way to the stars—and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out. Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

odd pronunciation

I wish Audible could find narrators who can say the word "bowsprit" correctly! This narrator is not alone in saying it like 🏹 instead of bough as in "bow to the king."

In book one young Bartlett turns away from the recruiting desk in front of the Elizabeth as he fears being recognized by the crew of one of his family's former ships. He instead signs on to a different ship. And yet...
at the start of the second book he is in command of the Elizabeth? No mention is made of how he got from the one to the other.

The devil is in the details...
Revisado: 04-27-20
The author tells a great take and his historical notes at the end are usually pretty good; though he does get one thing wrong in his notes. Hegemony is not a solely Chinese idea or concept. The word is Greek in origin and has been widely used in English since the 16th century.
Another annoying thing (at least to me) is the author's failure to learn about the firearms he writes about in his stories. An automatic pistol's slide locks to the rear when the magazine is empty and the trigger will not move until the slide is released. The trigger does not go click, click, click as the user continues to pull it as it would on a revolver.

Not bad if one doesn't mind...
Revisado: 04-19-20
This action adventure mystery series is actually pretty good if one doesn't mind playing fast and loose with history. As a U. S. Army veteran it also bothers me that the author gets so many things wrong about U.S. rank insignia. There are also things the author gets wrong about the German Imperial Flag that anyone with a passing knowledge of late 19th and early 20th century European history should know, let alone an author with access to Google.

Good story; poor knowledge of military equipment.
Revisado: 02-08-20
As a U.S. veteran, I have to wonder if the author's knowledge of British military hardware is as bad as his knowledge of U.S. hardware. For example he writes about hearing the five round bursts of M-16/A-4 rifles (the all M-16s begining with the A2 variant have a 3 round bursts). Near the end of the novel writes of two characters being passengers on an Apache helicopter; the Apache only has two seats, one for the pilot and one for the weapons systems officer.
If one can overlook the technical errors, these are good thrillers.

Historia
The first great war of Ovira is over, and the most hated king in centuries is dead, but his nephew still lives. However, Basen had nothing to do with the destructive war his uncle started. In fact it was his uncle who exiled him and his father to the territory of their enemies, where Basen's dreams of becoming a legendary mage now fade, as he must work all day just to eat. His only chance at regaining some semblance of the life he thought he would lead is to join an elite school that trains, houses, and feeds a thousand new young men and women each year.

Seems to drag
Revisado: 02-05-18
Story feels like it was written by a teenage girl, lots of emotion. Fight sequences seem like the author lacks experience. The same can be said of how the author approaches socio-political issues in the storyline.
