Spoiled by the narration

These are entertaining stories with little or no connection to reality and I would have enjoyed them had it not been for the appalling narration. The stilted cadence of the reader just spoiled the whole experience. Since the narrator was able to produce reasonable voices for characters other than the heroine, one has to believe the annoying accent was deliberate and one can only wonder if she believes that there is some remote corner of England where people actually speak in such a way. Let me assure her there is not.

This is an exceptionally well written book. The characters are well drawn, the storyline may be slightly predictable but maintains the listener 's interest from start to finish. The heroine is extremely well drawn and her voice maintains the age in which the story takes place with a gritty accuracy that never over romances or sinks to the maudlin. I loved the grammatical correctness and the narrator's diction. Thank you for employing a reader with an ability to portray an English novel in genuine English.

This is a book that could have been reduced by perhaps three hours. The heroine, Olivia, has little to recommend her or to persuade the reader to feel any empathy for her. The storyline is predictable and tends to ramble on without significant direction. There is , as seems to be necessary in modern fiction, the obligatory homosexual relationship which is given a lot of emphasis and actually brings out the only depth of characterization in the entire book. I am glad that I was not required to pay for the book or it would have been returned. As it was, I slogged through it trying to stay awake, in the hope it would develop some redeeming feature. The villain appears out of nowhere, and his motive for three murders is beyond reason. And still the narrative rambles on, so, no, redeeming features are there none.

For anyone familiar with Melton Mowbray, Bakewell, York, Blackpool as well as the taste of pork pie, stilton, Bakewell tart (pudding), these are delightfull stories that bring back memories and revive the taste buds. Albert and Rex are two characters drawn from real life, so reminiscent of folks we used to know and dogs who have gone before. Cannot wait to read the next episodes.

I had enjoyed this series of stories until this one. Is there no escape from the gay agenda? Are authors pressured into churning out characters involved in unnatural relationships in order to have their works published? Darcie Wilde is an excellent writer, with a good handle of the times she writes about, but she just lost another reader.

Virtual voice is always irritating because of the errors in expression and idiom but this book was really ruined by the blunders of the programmed voice performance. The whole style of the writing is colloquial in the extreme and the narration just couldn't do it credit. I think I could have enjoyed the story had I not been wondering so often exactly what was meant by the clumsy lack of correct emphasis. The only way to make sense of different passages was to imagine them in print and then decide how they would have been spoken using a real person. Pity!

Possibly this story might be of interest to anyone interested in winter sports. The characters are flat and the heroine has nothing that creates sympathy . She wanders around a confusing collection of events in an imaginary winter festival and stumbles on the solution in an unexciting and predictable ending.

Nice quietly English mystery. Just the thing for bedtime reading. Liked the village characters and had no idea who the murderer was until he was revealed.

Miss Wilde obviously very carefully researched customs and manners for the period and writes quite convincingly. Unfortunately she displays her American origins by repeated use of the word 'gotten'. While this word appears in some American dictionaries as the past tense of the verb 'to get' it certainly does not appear in the Oxford Dictionary and would never be used by any self respecting English author. It is a pity also the narrator has obviously never been to London in her life and didn't bother to discover the correct pronunciation for London districts. For example, Pall Mall is pronounced Pal Mal and not Pawl Mawl. Still a good try and the twists and turns in the story make it a good relaxing listen especially when the listener drops off every other chapter.

I kept wondering throughout this book if there had been a poor editor trying to translate English words into American. I have now discovered that the author is an American trying to write an English novel. Those of us brought up in England have to grit our teeth at the very obvious errors. I think the worst blunder is probably the idea of an English policeman eating a jelly (English would be jam) doughnut. First, where would he buy one in England, and second why would he waste his calories in a doughnut when he could have obtained delicious pastries or cakes from a bakery? The reader makes a reasonable effort but has a cadence which is totally unEnglish and every time she pronounced 'lorry' as lawry I winced. Why do American authors not stick to what they know and leave stories set in England to authors born there.
