Great action, unfortunate moralizing
Revisado: 09-18-21
I was amazed when I first saw that this audiobook actually contains six books. There's a lot of story here, and it's great action. Unfortunately, the author does not stick with the theme of patriotism and fighting against a ruthless enemy. In the latter half of the series, he begins moralizing to such a degree you wonder why the Americans are even fighting anymore. I seriously doubt that that was what was felt by most Americans fighting the war. Most fighting men recognized that the enemy we fought against went against civilized norms through mistreatment of prisoners, wanton killing of civilians, and pretending to surrender in order to kill their opponents. (Of course, the Japanese culture abandoned that long ago.) I enjoyed the action scenes, but there will be periods where you may want to fast forward.

Read this one to your children.
Revisado: 09-18-21
During the past few years, I've become increasingly aware of a genre of books that are written for children but also important for adults. this includes The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, 100 Cupboards, and On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness. The Green Ember is another such book.
These books have not only the advantage of teaching moral values that Western Civilization has been built upon, but it also has Christian allegory built in. That said, this book will not indoctrinate anyone into Christianity. However, it will help children learn courage, bravery, compassion, and all those other qualities we want to see in our children. And it is not focused heavily on either boys or girls.
I rarely like to give out five stars unless a book deserves it.

Historia
Eudora Honeysett is done with this noisy, moronic world - all of it. She has witnessed the indignities and suffering of old age and has lived a full life. At 85, she isn’t going to leave things to chance. Her end will be on her terms. With one call to a clinic in Switzerland, a plan is set in motion. Then she meets 10-year-old Rose Trewidney, a whirling, pint-sized rainbow of sparkling cheer. All Eudora wants is to be left alone to set her affairs in order.

Heartwarming story for the invisible elderly
Revisado: 04-28-21
Life is filled with a great deal of pain and disappointment. Eudora Honeysett has had her share of that. She is 85 and is done with life. She's ready to give herself a "good death" in Switzerland.
But life has other plans. Neighbors begin to interrupt her hermit-like life. Against her best wishes, she opens the door to her life and great things happen. There is a great deal of inter-generational friendship going on in the story - something we'd all wish for ourselves as we get older. We also get glimpses back into Eudora's earlier life, events that caused her to become withdrawn from the world. At the same time, Eudora's emphasis on courtesy and manners - refreshing for our culture - becomes the catalyst for the good changes that begin to happen. I personally like the emphasis on courtesy and manners. I hope I will be able to exercise those habits as I age.
I also have to say that the narrator did a wonderful job of not only acting but also of portraying both male and female voices. That's not easy to pull off.
It's not a Christian book, but I appreciate the life-affirming theme that this book provides. It may not have been intended this way, but I believe the book has a very pro-life message for those considering the end of their life.
Great story!

Historia
In the opening volume of his acclaimed American Revolution series, Nathaniel Philbrick turns his keen eye to pre-Revolutionary Boston and the spark that ignited the American Revolution. In the aftermath of the Boston Tea Party and the violence at Lexington and Concord, the conflict escalated and skirmishes gave way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It was the bloodiest conflict of the revolutionary war, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists.

Well written history of the start of the American
Revisado: 02-25-21
This is a good, well - written book about a part of American history that very few of us know much about. they are very few movies or TV programs about this era, even though it has a tremendous impact on us today. I've been stepping through American history starting with some of the Indian wars, through the French and Indian war, and now the American revolution. I know it's trendy too magnify the role of women and minorities in our history, but I'd rather hear about what happened without having to put labels on everyone.

A wonderful Christmas story
Revisado: 12-22-20
The Christmas list is a very heartwarming Christmas story. Yes, it is a little sappy, but only partly predictable. it's definitely not preachy, but it is a wonderful reminder of God's grace that entered into the world when Jesus was born here. I suggest the audible version because the narrator does a terrific job.

Here, Tammy Taylor, a young law student working for a firm in Savannah, becomes immersed in a deadly conspiracy. After Tammy learns dark secrets about her client, her continuing investigation uncovers sinister truths about her superiors as well.

Disappointing, tame, Christian drama
Revisado: 11-16-20
I applaud the author for writing a book about how a conservative Christian woman might navigate herself in a modern world that she is on accustomed to. there are probably some Christian readers who will enjoy this. I did not.
The book is not a thriller. it is a personal drama about a very conservative Christian young woman setting out on her own for the first time. she works in a law firm, but there isn't a lot of law that really impacts the book. there is some legal tension, but a major part of the book is really about her personal drama concerning two men who are interested in the main character.
The second book in the series continues the same personal drama. this is probably better for a small community of very conservative Christians. I don't see this as a mainstream book.

An informative and encouraging story
Revisado: 01-20-20
This is the first time I've actually learned anything about the work of Innocence lawyers. This story is certainly heartwarming and encouraging. the fact that they were people willing to make great sacrifices to help people who are wrongly imprisoned is inspiring.
I have no idea how many people have been wrongly convicted and end up in prison for decades, but certainly opens my eyes to the possibility that it's the result of a justice system that sometimes doesn't work. Truth is often not easy to come by, it's good to see that there are those who secret.

More action, less romance, please
Revisado: 12-12-19
When the storyline is in the thick of wartime action, it's great. However, the story moves into a romance in military hospitals. I would have enjoyed much more emphasis on the action. But the author does a great job of telling a story.

Lots of opinion, not much story
Revisado: 12-12-19
I have great sympathy for the main character and how he found Christ. It's great that he ended up in a good place after having a terrible childhood. I also am supportive of the conservative and Christian lessons to be learned from the book.
However, I was really looking for a memoir of Nick's childhood and what he experienced. We get snippets and short stories of that, but the book is a lot of commentary about laws, culture, and morality. Again, I agree with most of that commentary, but it was not really a memoir. It was a string of short stories with lots of commentary in between. I was looking for something similar to the memoir of Hillbilly Elegy. This book is not that.
