Historia
Doris Grandfelt, an employee at an accounting firm, was brutally stabbed to death . . . but nobody knew exactly where the crime took place. Her body was found the next night, dumped among a dense thicket of trees along the edge of an urban park, eight miles east of St. Paul, Minnesota. Despite her twin sister Lara Grandfelt’s persistent calls to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the killer was never found.

Best in a while. And the ending ... isn't.
Revisado: 04-16-25
... by which I mean the end of this book is clearly not the end of the story. My guess is that Sandford's next Davenport+Flowers book (or books) will wrap this up and maybe even fold in Letty Davenport, who gets a brief mention in "Lethal Prey". This story arc very much reminds me of the books in the series that were centered around serial hit-woman Clara Rinker.
That said I think this is the best Sandford novel in a while. The last one - the bio-terrorism one - just seemed contrived in several ways to me. In "Lethal Prey", Sandford brings back the Lucas and Virgil interplay that characterized the mid-series books. The writing and the setting - all in Minnesota with a brief trek to western Wisconsin - are classic Davenport.
Robert Petkoff is really coming into form as the narrator of these books. I do miss Richard Ferrone (and have been listening to Audible Plus books in Ferrone's back catalog) but Petkoff does a great job with this one and has improved substantially since taking over for Ferrone.
Audio production values are stellar as usual. Well done Audible and thank you John Sandford! Keep 'em coming please!

Old and still not quite right
Revisado: 03-15-25
Production values are not up to Audible's modern standards. This book sounds like it was recorded on analog tape, prior to the "loudness wars" of the 1990's. So the audio is very soft and lacks the crispness that we're accustomed to with modern digital recordings.
The story is just OK, some casual sex that really doesn't add anything to the plot and LOTS of guns and gun descriptions.
Narration is also just OK, Lawlor has trouble breathing life into these characters. As a result they are not particularly likeable.
Happy I tried it but probably won't go back for more in this series.

Historia
Detectives Abe Lieberman and Bill Hanrahan have been partners a long time - long enough to call each other "Rabbi" and "Father Murphy". Lieberman is 60, a grandfather, and a devout Jew. Hanrahan is a lapsed Catholic who's been hitting the bottle pretty heavily ever since his wife walked out on him. They may be flawed, but they're good cops. But even good cops have bad days.

Just wanted to hear Richard Ferrone
Revisado: 03-01-25
I sampled this title from the Plus Catalog because it's a detective story narrated by Richard Ferrone. I've loved Ferrone's narrations of the Prey detective novels by John Sandford, and I've been going through the back catalog of Richard Ferrone narrations since his untimely passing a few years back.
I don't think I'll continue with this series, given that books 2-onward cost actual credits. The story and characters aren't bad, but they're not particularly engaging either. The lead characters give off a real "Barney Miller" vibe, with Lieberman fitting the Abe Vigoda role and Hanrahan filling the Max Gail part. It was a little difficult to keep track of the characters in the book, which for me is usually due to my attention wandering because it just isn't engaging enough.
Overall a good listen for Ferrone fans, but not good enough for me to actually purchase the later books in the series.

Not as good as Kirk's Logan series
Revisado: 03-01-25
I listened to this book because I like Kirk's DCI Jack Logan series and I'm a David Tennant fan. One thing I've noticed about the Logan series that make it really great are the continuing characters and the way their story is woven into the plots of the individual novels in the series. "Him" is a one-off, and although you can hear Kirk's writing style there won't be more books with these same characters. So that strong point of Kirk's other books is not applicable here. Turning to the narration by David Tennant, I was disappointed with this as well. His part is small and due to the nature of the plot his lines after the prologue are distorted. So I didn't enjoy that aspect as much as I'd hoped either.
Plot/story is kind of mediocre, an AI-based plot set in the near future. Some elements are predictable. There are a few mildly surprising twists. One character's arc is left completely hanging.
On the plus side, the overall narration by Louise Brealey is excellent, as are the production values. I don't regret the time spent listening to this, as it was a free download for my membership. I would not recommend spending a credit on it, though.

Years ago I struggled to get through a couple chapters of Turow's previous work, Presumed Innocent. But after streaming the dramatization starring Jake Gyllenhaal as attorney Rusty Sabich, I decided to give this latest tome a try. So glad I did! This book is excellent in every way. The story is intricate and captivating. Grover Gardner's narration is spot-on. Production values are impeccable. Five stars!

In the grand tradition of Elmore Leonard, Laurence Shames creates an outrageous heavyweight thriller that’s heavy on atmosphere and action. Joey Goldman is a low-level New York hustler. He’s taking a working vacation in South Florida and looking to score big with a time-share scam. His half brother Gino Delgatto is a man in need of a fall guy. When they meet in Key West, the term dysfunctional family takes on a new meaning. Will one of them succeed? Or will the Miami mob find an eye-popping way to dispose of them both?

Historia
Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Another Bosch Great BUT ...
Revisado: 12-17-24
... this time it's about Maddie, not Harry. That's been a disappointment for me in the past, although Harry came back strong in the book immediately before this one. This time, not so much.
The story is great, though, as you'd expect from Michael Connelly. There are three significant plot lines, of which two focus primarily on the growing relationship between Maddie Bosch and Renee Ballard. The third involves Harry Bosch, but if I'm being honest it feels a little "bolted on" - like Connelly thought about weaving Harry in after the main plot lines were written. I didn't like that aspect of the book, mainly because I'm a fan of Harry and Titus Welliver's narration.
Christine Lakin and the familiar voice of Madison Lintz are very good. Production values are excellent as always, good job.
Looking forward to the next Bosch novel and hoping to see Maddie and Renee AND more of Harry.

Best Priest Novel Yet!
Revisado: 12-17-24
I loved listening to this book. The story is complex and twisty and Simon Vance's narration is sublime. I absolutely can't see why these novels are so "under the radar" - they are as good as any detective novels I've listened to - and I've heard a few!
The only suggestion I would have is to listen to the four (so far) novels in the proper sequence. All the Devils Are Here makes reference frequently to the previous novel, and of course there are many ongoing characters from the previous stories.
Excellent all around. Can't wait for the next one!
