Historia
On the coast of southern China, an eccentric entrepreneur spent three decades steadily building an obscure telecom company into one of the world’s most powerful technological empires with hardly anyone noticing. This all changed in December 2018, when the detention of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei Technologies’ female scion, sparked an international hostage standoff, poured fuel on the US-China trade war, and suddenly thrust the mysterious company into the global spotlight.

Good description of how China understood the critical importance of telecom technology before other countries in the west
Revisado: 02-19-25
The book does a good job of weaving the history of the company with the rise of China as a global economic powerhouse. It focuses on critical instances where the Chinese government understood they needed to directly support emerging technology companies. The book also does a good job of highlighting how the CCP appears to infiltrate and steer private companies that they can then use to push their agenda. It doesn’t openly state it, but it accurately describes the inconsistencies between Huawei’s stated policies and positions and what they were actually doing while growing their business around the world, particularly in emerging markets and conflict zones.
Overall a good book. My only problem was following the story along while trying to connect the Chinese names which I imagine is difficult for most people with western sounding names. I did manage to connect the dots when a person appeared throughout the book, so I managed to get the reason for including the main characters in the story and how some of the supporting characters played into the plot.

Good not great
Revisado: 10-13-24
Liked the first part of the book that describes his early years and enjoyed some of the “in the room” descriptions of navigating a rough economic and political climate. Although he’s clearly a brilliant guy and seems to be focused on critical issues, I was not that impressed by the part where he’s going on a naming spree in all the places he decides to help. I’m not describing my being put off by his lack of humility, I’m describing a part of the book that was not that interesting. Overall a good book.

You might believe you’re thinking clearly in the moments that matter most. But in all likelihood, when the pressure is on, you won’t be thinking at all. And your subsequent actions will inevitably move you further from the results you ultimately seek—love, belonging, success, wealth, victory. According to Farnam Street founder Shane Parrish, we must get better at recognizing these opportunities for what they are, and deploying our cognitive ability in order to achieve the life we want.

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism.

Extraordinarily narrated. Honest. Intimate. I loved it!
Revisado: 12-26-22
Hearing Bono tell the story of his life in his words is a delight. It feels as if you are having a warm, friendly - at times profound - one on one chat with him. He is able to connect through his narration as if you are old friends getting together at his favorite Dublin pub to catch up over a few drinks. I’m a fan of the band and am a fan of his, but was surprised by his candor, riveting storytelling, intelligence, and a level of self awareness that explains why he is such a special artist and why he’s had so much success away from the stage.

Historia
In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Brilliantly pushing back at the madness
Revisado: 07-31-22
I’ve always admired the way Douglas Murray can create an incisive narrative to argue his position. I think this is his best work so far.
I found myself in shock of some of the examples Murray was presenting of hardline positions by social activists trying to tear down icons of western culture, but my favorite part of the book was the chapter on gratitude. I think the book is terrific and thought provoking, but it is a must read (or listen) because of the beautiful way in which Murray describes gratitude as an antidote to resentment. That has to be one of the best chapters in any book I’ve ever read or listened to.

Why we think it’s a great listen: You thought he was a stodgy scientist with funny hair, but Isaacson and Hermann reveal an eloquent, intense, and selfless human being who not only shaped science with his theories, but politics and world events in the 20th century as well. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos.

What a beautiful way to tell the story of such an extraordinary person
Revisado: 10-12-20
Even though I had to rewind many parts of the book several times to try and get a sense for the explanations behind such complex ideas, Isaacson does an incredible job describing what made Einstein such an unparalleled genius while weaving the personal part of his life into his narrative of what made him such a compelling character and icon.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the book and highly recommend to anyone who is interested in learning how this extraordinary man’s life marked human history.

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

Historia
The guru to the gurus at last shares his knowledge with the rest of us. Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking. Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains....

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Malcolm does a great job showing both sides of a problem
Revisado: 02-28-20
Malcomb Gladwell has a keen eye for digging into a story, finding loose threads and exploring different arguments for a particular problem or situation that help you look at it from a completely new light. He is always thought provoking and incisive in his arguments and repositioning of a story. I thoroughly enjoyed the way he framed our collective cognitive biases through hard hitting stories we are all familiar with.
Overall a great listen! Malcomb is a terrific narrator and I enjoyed the audio clips and actors who re-enacted some of the stories he chose for the book.
I’m a Gladwell fan but highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good thought provoking story.
