SynopSin: I’ve only read one book by Connelly, The Black Echo (Bosch.1), and absolutely loved it. When I saw this production I jumped on it. I didn’t care for the echoey sound of the audio at first which turned me off the story. I thought about giving up. I am so happy I didn’t. The quality improved, but more importantly, the story became more engrossing. I was hooked. I was on the edge of my seat towards the end. Connelly is a skillful storyteller who creates absorbing and relatable characters. His stories move at slow, fast, and breakneck speeds. He sets the scenes up perfectly. I highly rec this production inspired by the short story of the same name.
Quaid and Welliver are great. They struck the right tones and inflections that really complimented the story. Connelly is quickly becoming a fave of mine.

This is my first Connelly book. I’ve actually seen the first 2 seasons of the Bosch series on Prime and enjoyed it. So when I saw the Audible special edition audio with Titus Welliver (the actor that portrays Bosch on the series) narrating, I was thrilled. This is very much a 90’s crime novel. The verbiage, attitudes, socioeconomic/sociopolitical issues, etc., all resonate the 90’s. I remember reading Crichton, Patterson, and the like, and this novel has that feel. Though IMO, on a much higher level. That’s not to knock Patterson. He writes enjoyable novels, but Connelly has a more realistic connection to the subject matter of which he writes. Bosch is such a good-complex, tough, yet empathic-character. The story is laid out so perfectly and succinctly. Even the setting is so lovingly detailed it becomes one of the characters.
I enjoyed this book so much and have chastised myself for taking so long to read a Connelly novel. I’ve already added his entire works to my TRL excel file, and will be voraciously reading through them.

Narrator: Welliver was excellent! He brings such life and depth to Bosch on the TV series, and does the same for this book. The subtle intensity, grittiness, and empathy are all there.

Howard has become one of my fave authors. The first book I read by her was, 56 Days. I really liked it. The next book I read was The Nothing Man, and I loved it! I thought Nothing Man was better than ‘56’. Rewind is along the ‘56’ line for me. I enjoyed quite a lot and definitely rec it. I feel like there was some muddled aspects of the plot/story, but Howard’s writing, and Collins wonderful Irish lilt, kept me captivated. I gave it 3 stars but it’s really 3 1/2.

This is my 2nd book by Darcie Little Badger, Elatsoe being the first. I loved Elatsoe, but I think I may love Snake even more. Badger is such a wonderful storyteller. She weaves a fun, compelling, and emotional story. Her character development is superb. The reader becomes emotionally linked to each one.
Oli and Nina are the main protagonists in each of their respective adventures in their respective worlds. I loved them from their introduction. The supporting cast of characters are just as interesting, and lovable. I can easily see—and am hoping for—a sequel to this story.
Highly rec it!

~Disclosure by Michael Crichton | Audio
~Narrated by: John Lithgow

Synopsis: A brutal struggle in the cutthroat computer industry; a shattering psychological game of cat and mouse; an accusation of sexual harassment that threatens to derail a brilliant career... this is the electrifying core of Michael Crichton's new novel.

SynopsiSexxy: This could, should, have been a great novel. A relevant and valuable social commentary on sexual harassment in the workplace, and out of the workplace. Unfortunately it was a mouthpiece for Crichton’s misogynistic POV. And what’s worse, he gave voice to the misogyny not just through the male characters, but through a Latina character as well—a sexual harassment lawyer to boot. There are a lot of cringeworthy quotes and scenes. The overall tone, and the comfort of which Crichton wields it, is to belittle and even degrade women who were brave enough to come forward and report those that sexually harassed/assaulted them.
To be clear, my issue isn’t that the roles were reversed. Indeed, men can, and have been, sexually harassed in the workplace as well. This is where Crichton could’ve shone a light on the heinous act itself. But he didn’t. What he chose to do was make all men victims. That harassment is isn’t all that bad.
Quote from sexual harassment lawyer Louise Fernandez:
“My husband works in the same firm as I do. After we first met, he asked me out five times. At first I said no, but finally I said yes. We are happily married now. And the other day he said to me that given the climate now if we met today, he probably wouldn’t ask me out five times. He’s just drop it.”
Like, hey guys, it’s ok to harass and hound women that have said no to your unprofessional, inappropriate, unrelenting and unwanted harassment until you wear them down or make them feel uncomfortable enough to finally give in to your misogyny. WTF.

And this gem:
“It’s terrible to say it…But in the real world? With no witnesses? Alone in the office with his boss? He probably should have shut up and fucked her. Because right now, that poor bastard has no options at all. If he’s not careful, his life is over.”

Horrible book. Only reason I gave it 1 star is b/c the suspense part of the book was decent at times.

~The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard | Audio
~ Narrated by: Alana Kerr Collins & John Keating

“When I was twelve, a man broke into my home and murdered my mother, father, and younger sister, Anna—seven years old then, and forever.”

This is the 2nd novel by Catherine Ryan Howard (CRH) that I’ve read. The first was 56 Days. I loved “Days”. But I think I loved “Nothing Man” even more. I absolutely love the concept. Though the story itself resembles the Golden State Killer as represented in Michelle McNamara’s amazing non-fiction true crime novel. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark. Like resembles it a lot. Killer starts off stalking, then raping, torturing, and progressing to murder, then just, stops. This is GSK.
The style in which CRH writes ‘Nothing Man’ is brilliant. The characters are well-developed. I love the cat-and-mouse game that the survivor pulls on the killer.
This was such an enjoyable, addictive read.

Narrators: Bloody brilliant! This is my 3rd novel by an Irish author this year. And all were audio with Irish narrators. I think I might be addicted to the Irish lilt. Both narrators did an amazing job of inflecting emotion and creating a phenomenal audiobook experience.

CRH is becoming one of my new fave authors. Highly rec this book in either physical or audio format.

It was good. Tense. Character development was decent. Not great. B/c of the audio and I listen while I work, I missed things. It was not easy to discern the flashback scenes right away b/c the narrator just went into seamlessly.
Narration was very good other than that. I love that Steven Weber, of Wings fame, narrated. Not sure some will get the delicious irony of that.
Overall I think it was a good tense thriller and def rec it.

This was an amazing serialization of Gaiman’s seminal series, The Sandman. Be forewarned this is not a reading of the complete Sandman series. It is “Act I”. Audible has greenlit “Act II” and “Act III” with Act II releasing this year—2021., I believe. Gaiman is one of my all-time fave authors. I’ve read 5 novels by him, and even went to a book reading/signing of The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I’ve read comics by him, and have enjoyed everything I’ve read. Though there were a couple of stories in Smoke & Mirrors I was less than thrilled with, I still enjoyed the book overall.
This serialization is preformed magnificently. Gaiman narrates throughout, which is a huge treat. He has such a calming and effective tone. The voice actors are numerous and pitch perfect; Inflection, emotion, and acting all draw the listener in to Gaiman’s’ surreal, fantastical, amazingly weird, deliciously quirky, world. The characters are unique, eclectic, passionate, endearing, monstrous, and relatable. Gaiman touches on the fantastical, but the story is also grounded in sociopolitical elements.
I did not want this to end. I cannot wait for the next two acts. And I’m saving up for a special edition collection of the entire Sandman series in GN form.
I highly rec this audio-read. Like HIGHLY HIGHLY rec it.
Thank you, Mr. Gaiman! Thank you, Audible, for making this happen.
