Every book in this series is better than the last
Revisado: 03-05-25
I am a huge fan of the narrator, Alana Kerr Collins, and that is how I found my way to Samantha Shannon.
The series is one of my favorites and I can’t wait for the next book which is going to be about another year. Oh well. This was my favorite of the five bone season novels. There are also a couple of Novellas and I’ve read and listened to them all twice except for this book which just came out so I’ve only listened to it once.
Since real life is getting so dystopian, it feels really important to find heroes and heroines in the world of fiction. Samantha Shannon is masterful at creating worlds, and there was no exception in book 5 of The Bone Season.
If you haven’t read the series, I highly recommend reading the entire series or listening to the entire series. You’ll miss a lot if you start with this book. But once you start, you will be hooked.

One of the best WWII stories I’ve ever read
Revisado: 02-21-23
…or in this case listened to. I cheered. I cried. I sobbed. And to know this woman really existed and did all the things she did and in the 1940’s at that fired me up to the extreme. The author’s afterward should not be missed. But as she says, afterward.
I am always humbled by what people had to live through in Europe during those years. Then, now and forever F^*€ Nazis! May they forever rot in hell.

Historia
Emilia Drakon was once the youngest and kindest of the dragon sorcerers, but she's now the last of her kind. Betrayed and angry, she trades her meekness for a sword and embarks on a quest for vengeance that will lead her straight into the arms of the legendary Captain Maria Welles. Captain of the famed pirate ship, the Wicked Fate, Maria is every bit as treacherous and bloodthirsty as they say. She has her own vendetta and practically jumps at the chance to trick Emilia into joining her crew.

I should have listened to the only 1 star reviewer
Revisado: 01-25-23
I should have listened to the only 1 star reviewer's review because SIX HOURS into this book, only a day had gone by and pretty much nothing had happened. So much potential! Lesbian pirates and all but after 6 hours I was screaming in frustration that the two main characters, Maria (the pirate captain) and Emilia (a dragon woman who had yet after SIX HOURS to do anything magical) just kept doing this push me/pull you bs that was SO ANNOYING. It's only that the narrator was decent that I made it that far in. I kept thinking, "surely something will happen soon," but after SIX HOURS it never did.
I have no idea what happened after six hours because I gave up and returned the book.

I loved this story. The contrasts, the setting, the back stories. Julie’s courage, growth and awakenings. And this is my first book read by Käthe Mazur and now I want to listen to other books she’s narrated.

Painted Horses sends a dauntless young woman on a heroic quest, sings a love song to the horseman's vanishing way of life, and reminds us that love and ambition, tradition and the future, often make strange bedfellows. It establishes Malcolm Brooks as an extraordinary new talent.

The lyrical language! The mastery of narrator Julia Whelan! A bittersweet slice of Americana as we tumble like an avalanche further into the “modern age”. Begs the question of the veracity of progress.

Historia
In the Old Country, they called them the Gentry: ancient spirits of the land, magical, amoral, and dangerous. When the Irish emigrated to North America, some of the Gentry followed...only to find that the New World already had spirits of its own, called manitou and other such names by the Native tribes. Now generations have passed, and the Irish have made homes in the new land, but the Gentry still wander homeless on the city streets. Gathering in the city shadows, they bide their time and dream of power.

This was a spectacular historical lesbian romance!
Revisado: 01-16-22
Firstly, the story was so engaging I didn’t want to stop listening at any point despite having to at least once in a while.
What I found the most endearing about the book was what it was like to realize that you prefer the same gender that you are during a time where there was almost no infrastructure to do that. The doctor character therefore was necessary as the footbridge over the chasm of modern-for-the-time convention that the two women were able to walk over in order to even know what the feelings they had for each other were. My favorite Jae books have been her historical romances. The amount of research that went into this one was staggering. Well done Jae! Samantha Cook’s narration was also fabulous! If I could’ve given it 10 stars, I certainly would have. I don’t think I’m going to be able to read or listen to anything else for at least a few days. And I never say that.

Perhaps my favorite Gerri Hill audiobook
Revisado: 12-29-21
Cassandra York did such a fabulous job with the main characters’ voices. The whole narration, but I appreciated the different voice from Hill’s popular and regular narrator.
The story: while it followed the HEA formula, it was as much about the case…and sometimes more about the case…as was the love story.
The case was complicated and rather gruesome and I enjoyed the unfolding of that part of the story.
I have been on a Gerri Hill audiobook jag and this probably colors my deep enjoyment of this particular book. I only shouted at the main characters once 😌

Historia
Two years ago, Olivia Martindale left behind her Montana hometown and her husband, Jace, certain it was the best decision for both of them. Back temporarily to protect her almost-adopted daughters from their biological mother, she discovers an old, handwritten cookbook in the attic. Its pages are stained and torn, their edges scorched by flame. Some have been smeared by water or tears. The recipes are written in different hands and in different languages.

Just gorgeous
Revisado: 04-21-21
I’m glad I didn’t listen to all the reviewers who complained about the repetitions in the book. The repetitions mattered. The Holocaust story was devastating and the survival of this beautiful family through the one surviving member’s courage to continue living was very powerful and in my opinion was the REASON for all the repetitions in the larger more modern story.
This is a beautiful story. Highly recommend

Historia
Adults have forgotten the feel of a teenager's love. For you a teenager will walk through glass doors, stay awake three days in a row, be an angel standing under your window in the rain. So what that we don't know how to order from the butcher or apply foundation or insert a diaphragm? Show us. So advises Paige Bergman, a high school student who falls in love with housewife Fiona Gallagher in Jane Summer's lyrical debut novel, The Silk Road.

Capturing the internal landscape of the yearnings and longings of first love, of teenage love before ever having the language was flawless.
Abby Craden was delicious as always.
