Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Stunning!
Revisado: 09-20-23
Stunning…in ways too numerous to cover here but…. What a gift we have been given by Mr. Egan as he has carefully researched and now tells us the verifiable history and impact of the KKK. In doing so, he tells of not only the past but also the future of our nation if recent governance by the modern GOP continues untamed by citizens, including moderate Republicans, who can and must save the nation from a return to our horrible past. Thank you, Timothy Egan, for your work.

Historia
Millions of people climb the grand marble staircase to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art every year. But only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. They’re the guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits, keeping a watchful eye on the two million square foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamourous fledgling career at The New Yorker, Patrick Bringley never thought that he’d be one of them.

Thank you for the beautiful respite from the ‘noise’
Revisado: 07-14-23
The reader’s voice bringing the author’s words to life carries awe and wonderings about meaning, artistry, the lives of all who created, ‘guarded’ and viewed an exhibit. Some of the pieces I’ve seen and could revisit in my mind…a gift. Thank you, Mr. Bringley, for sharing your words, thoughts, life and helping me to think beyond the art on the walls at any museum.

Historia
After a deadly attack in South Sudan left six-year-old Achut Deng without a family, she lived in refugee camps for ten years, until a refugee relocation program gave her the opportunity to move to the United States. When asked why she should be given a chance to leave the camp, Achut simply told the interviewer: I want life. But the chance at starting a new life in a new country came with a different set of challenges. Some of them equally deadly. Taught by the strong women in her life not to look back, Achut kept moving forward, overcoming one obstacle after another.

Historia
Amy Bloom began to notice changes in her husband, Brian: He retired early from a new job he loved; he withdrew from close friendships; he talked mostly about the past. Suddenly, it seemed there was a glass wall between them, and their long walks and talks stopped. Their world was altered forever when an MRI confirmed what they could no longer ignore: Brian had Alzheimer’s disease.

A Loving Story of Love and the Final Goodbye
Revisado: 06-14-22
A touching, heartfelt story about a couple deeply in love who deal forthrightly with the effect of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Amy Bloom, the wife and author, relates the trials, emotions and challenges of the decision of her husband, Brian, to end his life before his dementia worsens. The role of Dignitas, in Zurich, is explained and serves as the organization that will allow Brian Ameche to end his life peacefully and on his own terms. It makes one wonder why people need to go to Switzerland to die on their own terms when facing the possibility of living a long life with dementia.

Historia
As revelatory as Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, physician and award-winning author Louise Aronson’s Elderhood is an essential, empathetic look at a vital but often disparaged stage of life. For more than 5,000 years, 'old' has been defined as beginning between the ages of 60 and 70. That means most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Yet at the very moment that humans are living longer than ever before, we’ve made old age into a disease.

Historia
From acclaimed literary biographer of Kurt Vonnegut and Harper Lee comes the life story of a song, one of the most iconic ever written: John Lennon's "Imagine". "Twenty-two lines of graceful, plain-spoken faith in the power of a world to repair and change itself," said Rolling Stone. Only 183 seconds long, the simple melody and poetry captured the wounded hopefulness of its moment - and transcended its time to inspire generations that followed.

Historia
Tensions during the Yalta Conference in February 1945 threatened to tear apart the wartime alliance among Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin just as victory was close at hand. Catherine Grace Katz uncovers the dramatic story of the three young women who were chosen by their fathers to travel with them to Yalta, each bound by fierce family loyalty, political savvy, and intertwined romances that powerfully colored these crucial days.

Fascinating history of fathers and daughters together at the end of WWII
Revisado: 08-26-21
The book is a wonderful tapestry of the intersection of political leaders and their daughters at the Yalta Conference near the end of World War II. Well-researched and exceptionally well narrated, the book is an important coda following “Citizens of London” that established the inter-relatedness of the young women. The event marked the pinnacle for each daughter with their respective fathers: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Averill Harriman. This book captures the essence and closeness of father and daughter at a critical meeting otherwise attended by diplomats and military leaders. Such a fortuitous coincidence that we see the personal along with the historical.
A masterful book.

Historia
The true story of what took place in Donald Trump’s White House during a disastrous 2020 has never before been told in full. What was really going on around the president, as the government failed to contain the coronavirus and over half a million Americans perished? Who was influencing Trump after he refused to concede an election he had clearly lost and spread lies about election fraud? To answer these questions, Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig reveal a dysfunctional and bumbling presidency’s inner workings in unprecedented, stunning detail.

Should be required reading
Revisado: 08-20-21
I decided to read 1-2 books about the DJT presidency and this is my first, chosen due to my respect for the work of the authors. I pay close attention to national politics and have for 60 years, for many reasons. Have read a book or two about lots of presidents in an effort to understand more in depth the complicated situations in history faced by various presidents. Given that the subject of this book continues to crave the limelight and inserts himself into public life to keep his name and brand front and center as he plans to be a candidate again, this book should be part of our nation’s ‘never forget’ promise to the Constitution we must uphold.

of our military and security professionals. I know of several who have lost a lot of the ‘life’ I take for granted—stability, ignorance of serious, even life or nation-threatening situations, the ‘bliss’ my ignorance enables. I’m grateful for this story and for the women and men who accept the responsibility, make the sacrifices and pursue their goals without losing their souls.
