The X-Files had an episode back in the 90s that hinted at 'the shakes' true explanation, However, the writers understood that trying to sell people on the idea that starvation can be overcome by meditating harder. Given the same show expects you to believe that the government hides flying saucers for fun and profit, at least till the next commercial break...it explains just how daft breatharians are given none have been able to last on camera without food or water.

The Laundry Files also talk about the syndrome without trying to convince the reader that breatharians are anything other than charlatans and morons. Given computer magic and Lovecraftian monsters are established as normal parts of agents' daily lives...that says a lot about the topic.

IF the author had gone with militant veganism, I'd have more respect for the work as a whole. Instead, the lead character spends most of the book engaging in what a girl who had to spend a month on nothing but lentil beans can describe as willful child neglect. That month was so traumatic that despite it happening when I was 7, I still couldn't associate the taste of lentils with anything but the miserable agony of borderline starvation till I was in my late 20s. The demonizing and active shaming of his wife for giving children milk hits differently when I still can't tolerate the off-taste of government-issued powdered milk as a constant reminder of crippling poverty.

For people who haven't left the trauma of childhood poverty and constant food insecurity behind, this is tone-deaf and downright offensive. For people who like SCIENCE in their fiction, even if it's just in the story for contrast with magic or supernatural elements...its sloppy writing.

While I may not have gotten it without the sale price I'm glad I did. It may be a saturated genre but the execution was fun and entertaining, characters are distinctive and I respect the world building.

I really enjoyed the way the authors confronted dark themes with twisted humor. With so much of the storytelling centered on children of dysfunctional households, it's refreshingly honest about how kids cope with horrible situations in the moment. Sure, everyone needs serious therapy later, but that's just how life works when things get messy.

So since my ovulation feels like a mix between a punch to my kidneys and painful gas, it's not a part of my body I want to think about when feeling spicy. Given the line 'my ovaries are screaming' was used a lot...I had to check the writer's gender just to be sue the red pill love interests were there because a woman has terrible taste in men. It reads like a man tried to write a woman without obsessively describing her breasts...

The author has definite faults that the digital voice play up. Spelling mistakes and a lack of understanding of how teen girls talk are present but...yeah. The speed people turn on their own church members is very real and very Wisconsin. The world building could be better but feels like the most accurate way kids learn so...over all good

But I did and loved it. Had I known there was a book back in the late 90s I'd have been running(literally) to my library for a copy. The book has all that and more.

The last name "Wise" is clearly either British or German but mangled by Brits. The first name Bernadette is obviously French but has been popular in Brittany. The Latina impersonation (badly done,no less) for a character with an obviously British last name and French first name...just because she cleans for a living is a spit in the face to every American that pays their rent cleaning for others.

The writer did such an amazing job of balancing the "magic is real" moments with "wizards are fictional" moments I'm not sure if 2 emotionally damaged teens were fooled by a delusional but luck fool, scammed by a con man, or actually found more to reality. And I loved it.

I've been studying paganism both modern and ancient for decades and often don't see such incredible nuance involving the diversity of the modern pagan paths. The cultural diversity is just as well handled. the overall story is also engaging and interesting characters make this a total package for many of us that deep dive into alternative spiritual options.

Let's start with the narrator. When ALL characters sound like they have screamed themselves out at a smokey rock concert to be 'emotional' it's counterproductive. And EVERYTHING is hyper-emotional. The accents are rubbish too, It's painful to listen to.

And on to the story. Everyone is an idiot. I mean EVERYONE and that's just in chapter one. ONE cop being too dumb to keep details back from his comrades is already bad...but the whole precinct is that stupid. Since the 'rational' characters are idiots, there SHOULD be some improvement with the fantasy cast....but 1,000 years did nothing for their base IQ. It makes old Harlequin bodice rippers look like Shakespeare when morons go into exposition for so long I needed to speed up the book just to complain. There may be spicy bits, but I hate everybody so much by the end of chapter one I don't care. skip this if you want a plot with your dirty bits. Fan fiction written by a 12-year-old on a sugar binge would be an improvement.
