Don't bother
Revisado: 06-04-24
This story is completely anachronistic and nobody is in character on top of that. Lizzy gives in easily to the proposal from Mr Darcy, Mr Bennett has no concerns about his daughter being unhappy and Mrs Bennett is going to mass?!
I'm not sure why the author bothered even making this a P&P variation, it would have been better if it was an original fiction. Just change the names of all the characters and nobody will suspect that it was ever related to Pride and Prejudice.

Inconsistent and Out of character
Revisado: 01-06-24
Mr Bennett goes from forcing his favorite daughter to marry Mr Collins, to then insisting she wait to marry Mr Darcy so she doesn't rush into it and regret it. It seems incredibly inconsistent and makes him feel uncaring.
Lizzy is a bit stupid in this story - running away in bad conditions multiple times and believing Caroline Bingley.
There were many other things that were inconsistent in this way and it really made the story unenjoyable as a result.
The only real highlight was the narration.

Historia
Hazel Stillman is a woman of rare independence and limited opportunities. Born with a clubbed foot, she was sent away as a child, and, knowing her disability means a marriage is unlikely, she devoted herself to scholarship and education. Now working as a teacher in an elite private girls’ school, she is content with the way her story has unfolded. When her uncle Elliott Mayfield presents her with the prospect of a substantial inheritance if she marries, Hazel is offended.

Sad and ableist
Revisado: 08-02-22
The characters keep saying that Duncan has a broken brain which is very hurtful. Describing an autistic character as being broken in any way is one of the worst and most unfortunate ways to do this if you are considering that Autistic people may actually read your book.
It's one thing that a rude person a long time ago said it, but HIS WIFE repeats that he has a broken brain to someone else.
As an autistic adult I found this story upsetting on a lot of levels, but that was the biggest part for me. I'm not broken and that would be the most hurtful thing anyone could say about me. I felt broken for most of my life and finally realized I'm not.
If the author wanted to write about disabled characters why did she need to make the two disabled people fall in love? Why can't an abled person and disabled person fall in love? That is really uncomfortable to me, as the story seemed to repeat the idea that these two people weren't good enough for normal people, but the leftovers could take comfort in each other.
Super ableist viewpoint and I just felt like they both deserved better futures.

Historia
Raina Bretton is a rag woman in London's East End when a handsome stranger appears in a dank alley and offers her a glittering smile and a chance for adventure. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her, one that will take her away from her hardscrabble life and give her a chance to be a lady. Things she could only dream of might be coming true. But some dreams turn out to be nightmares. Though Raina has traded squalor for silk and satin, something about the abbey is deeply unsettling.

So-so Story - bad narrator.
Revisado: 07-25-22
The narrator uses this raspy voice for all the male characters that make them sound like they all have lung damage from a fire they all escaped. It sounds painful and I found it confusing to distinguish the villain and the love interest because of this.
The story itself is alright, but the heroine is just really stupid and ignores all the red flags and the literal pleading of her true love to run away with him for reasons that are difficult to believe, quite frankly.
It's pretty heavy handed with the Christian religious reflection on the part of the character, but it didn't really feel forced. If that isn't your thing maybe skip this one.
It's a free listen right now since it's included so I don't regret listening to it, but I would have regretted paying for it.

Gaslighting, Rapist, Abusive Mr Darcy
Revisado: 02-21-22
This story glorifies an abusive man abusing his wife, shown from the perspective of the gaslit woman he is married to. This is not the Mr Darcy that Jane Austen wrote, because he was not cruel.
Very disappointed.
