Sincere and Heartfelt
Revisado: 01-28-25
I read this for a variety of reasons. First of all, we went to the same school and lived in the same neighborhood, albeit my experience predates hers by some years. Secondly, my daughter is the same age and I like keeping abreast on how the generation mine created thinks and reacts. But thirdly, I've followed along on this journey being a citizen of Michigan
I found this book to be a very personal, casual revelation of Gretchen's,s life and her journey as governor I remember that winter when everyone froze. My furnace died and I was living in one room with space heaters and blankets pinned over the doors And then, during the pandemic when the sewer line clogged and we had to have a porta potty (in late March) in the driveway until we finally found a plumber who would come....with a lot of restrictions about masks and no contact It's funny now, even though taking my crone self out at 3 am to sit in the middle of the driveway wondering if some vagrant would come exploring was rather daunting.
Above all else, this book reveals a person just like the rest of us.

The author did some obvious research for these books, and his interpretations of the research were accurate.
Revisado: 01-28-25
I thought the Alicia character q bit off the wall I am aware that life events do shape a person, but the castration? That was a bit off the wall, and I think most adults, while sympathizing, would also see the imminent threat a child with such powers would be and put a clamp on those powers. Also, once it was established what had occurred, would they not have sought psychiatric help? But then, I guess, the parameters of the protagonist would change completely.
I did like the world building, with the 7 levels and alternate universs. The character development was excellent, but I wonder if Alicia's sister will show up again since that whole side of things seemed rather unresolved.
The books read more like a serial television program with the cliff hanger endings....maybe future book could resolve a bit more?
I've been to Scotland several times for lengthy stays. Yes, they swear a lot, but I hope that David can grow out of the wtf stuff as he matures.

Beyond Witchery
Revisado: 06-15-24
Plotl8ne is a bit thin and characters need a bit more development. Hopefully this will happen in the successive books. Would have liked a bit more connection to the real witches of Scotland and more actual history.

well written
Revisado: 06-12-24
I like the reader and have listened to other books he's performed. The author writes well. This is ju st not my cup of tea. Not what I thought it was going to be. Found much of it offensive, even though it was contextual. Was more like graphic Tom Clancy then Gaimin.

A contemporary man, John Thornburn (a meek, non-violent and unpredictable artist) and woman, Derval (his tough, confrontational, strong and warrior-like lover) time travel to ancient Ireland to avenge a Viking attack. Packed with fascinating details of historical time and place in Irish history and delicately balanced on the border between realism and fantasy, the story centers around one of the most famous and beautiful illuminated manuscripts in history, the legendary but entirely real Book of Kells.

the pronoun thing
Revisado: 11-01-23
I realize the author used the switching pronouns to denote a trans character but it made things so textually confusing I have trans friends and they go by their chosen pronouns. They do not switch back and forth . I wish there was a better way to get that across than the confusing switch. Other than that, I enjoyed this whole series and found it very creative. I do wish Grace could have ended it better with her father....he might be in that tree but having to execute your own parent is pretty ghastly and whether deserved or not, I would think that would be haunting in itself.

Historia
Meanwhile, Gillan McArdle’s academic career is ending because of one stupid lapse of judgement. Offered a short-term contract, he lands on the Hebridean island of Harris to investigate obscure animal bones. Quickly dismissing the unicorn skull as a thinly disguised fake, he can’t deny there’s something unusual about these bones. Baited by rumors of a majestic tusked horse roaming the uplands, Gill begins to suspect someone is manipulating him. As he gradually unravels the mystery of the skull, he grasps a disturbing conclusion: If this creature does exist, the evidence suggests it’s a killer.

Imaginative Myth
Revisado: 10-25-23
pretty good story but am still a bit confused about the Biker Guy. Archangel Rafael was the only thing that made sense. Interesting concept of bringing back the mythic figures for Armageddon.

High Fantasy at it's best!
Revisado: 05-18-23
What an excellent trilogy! While the races may seem familiar, there are new twists! The characters are incredibly likable and the story proceeds without any slow spots. A few foreshadowing s were obvious but not so much as to detract. The idea of redemption was fully visited on several fronts.

Artful Blending
Revisado: 05-11-23
these books were an artful blending of Nordic and Celtic lore regarding fairies and the fae world.... the alternate world was familiar and yet different enough that you got the sense of otherness. the narrator was a good storyteller and knew how to disassemble into the different characters with believability. All in all, it was worth the credits!

I've been an avid follower of the story from the very beginning. All I can say is that this book is tedious. I'm over halfway through, and I don't know whether I will finish it or not. I am so disappointed. I don't often not finish a book......
