Historia
Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

I rarely every pick short story collections. Prior to purchasing I didn't read anything about this selection, as I had preordered it since I have liked everything this author has written. I didn't realize until a couple hours in that it was short stories. I ended up liking all of them. There is a novella at the end that connects back to Rules of Civility. It was also good. Overall I'm glad I listened.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

I wouldn't say this is his best work, but it is pretty good. I started it and put it down but returned to it again after awhile and finished it. It kept me interested most of the time. I may even give the sequel a try since I am a fan of this author.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

Good but not King’s best 4.26 stars
Revisado: 01-22-24
Good book that’ll keep listeners interested. However, it not on the level of The Stand or The Dark Tower series. It’s very long, but pretty easy to follow. Just not as good as some of his other stuff. Still, it’s good, and most any Stephen King fan will like it.

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

This book kept my attention for the entire time, though this probably had something to do with the fantastic narration. This novel is not as good as her last, The Great Believers, but that was a great novel and difficult to duplicate. Still, it was a worthwhile read/listen.

This is one of the better titles I've listened to in awhile. Probably the best since Crossroads. I wish I could find another like it, a story that checks all the boxes: great writing, great narrator, great story.

Historia
The Candy House opens with the staggeringly brilliant Bix Bouton, whose company, Mandala, is so successful that he is “one of those tech demi-gods with whom we’re all on a first name basis.” Bix is forty, with four kids, restless, and desperate for a new idea, when he stumbles into a conversation group, mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalizing” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, “Own Your Unconscious”—which allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share your memories in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes.

The sequel to A Visit From the Goon Squad is fairly entertaining, though not as good as the first novel. It had a lot of potential. There's a futuristic and/or sci-fi element to the novel, though the concepts are somewhat vague and never fully explained. It loses some momentum towards the end. Still, pretty good.

As children, the three siblings—Harrison, Lewyn, and Sally—feel no strong familial bond and cannot wait to go their separate ways, even as their father becomes more distanced and their mother more desperate. When the triplets leave for college, Johanna, faced with being truly alone, makes the decision to have a fourth child.

This is one of the best stories I've listened to this year. While the end isn't quite on par with the rest of the book, I enjoyed the entire 16+ hours. The book would have been better if the writer's political preferences weren't projected onto the outcomes of the characters. Still, a few minor flaws doesn't take away from an otherwise thoroughly entertaining novel.

A one-in-ten-billion natural disaster devastates Chicago. A Jewish comedian, his most devoted fan, and the city’s mayor must struggle to move forward while the world—quite literally—caves beneath their feet. With this polyphonic tale of Chicago-style politics and political correctness, stand-up comedy and Jewish identity, celebrity, drugs, and animal psychology, Levin has constructed a monument to laughter, love, art, and resilience in an age of spectacular loss.

I was expecting a bit more from this author, especially after last novel, Bubblegum, which was fantastic in every way. Mount Chicago, on the other hand, is just mediocre. There's just not much to get excited about here. That being said, I didn't listen to the entire thing, which is over 20 hours long, and sections of this novel are very entertaining. Also, it peters out towards the end, unfortunately. I probably expect too much from this guy, as he's one of my favorite authors. Still, it's a decent read/listen.

The 3rd book in this series is much like the previous ones, though the characters are different. It still takes place in the same city. It’s a little better than Book 2 and not as good as Book 1. Still an entertaining installment. The author and narrator make a good team.

Jonathan Franzen’s novels are celebrated for their unforgettably vivid characters and for their keen-eyed take on contemporary America. Now, in Crossroads, Franzen ventures back into the past and explores the history of two generations. With characteristic humor and complexity, and with even greater warmth, he conjures a world that resonates powerfully with our own.

Maybe I'm biased, but I knew this would be a good novel before listening to it. Franzen always delivers. When I saw David Pittu was narrating, I knew this one couldn't miss, as he is probably the best narrator I've heard. His work on The Goldfinch and The Marriage Plot is also top notch. I don't have a bad thing to say about this one. Can't wait for more in this series to come!
