Good story, but no way is the “narrator” human

The story was good, and I learned more about Braddock and Washington and Clark than I knew before. But the narration, which had the telltale signs of an automated voice instead of a human, did a disservice to what was an interesting and inventive weaving of history and fiction.

Not enjoying the Virtual Voice

The stories are fun. But the virtual voice is clunky. There’s a Shatner-esque quality to the cadence, where the stops and starts are distracting. And, of course, acronyms are mispronounced—like M.E. (for Medical Examiner) is pronounced “me”. The author narrated the first novel, and that was much easier to listen to.

There’s something seriously wrong with a story about catching a serial killer where chopped up body parts are NOT the creepiest feature of the book. Pirog’s Thomas Prescott has a truly disturbing fixation with alpha males, constantly defaulting to asshole jerk behavior and frat boy humor to describe the women in his life. One star because zero stars is not an option; no fault of the narrator. Life’s too short to waste time on this.

Loved this show in "jigglevision" back in the day when it was first on Comedy Central. So glad to see it come to Audible:)

For those interested in political power in America and devotees of Caro this one is a "must listen." To hear Caro talk about his work in his own voice gives this a special flavor. And I'm so glad this was done as an Audible exclusive. I only wish there was also a hard copy or Kindle companion edition available.

Beautifully written. And beautifully read (for those of us in book clubs who don't have the time to sit down and actually physically read the book ourselves). Lots of good points to chew over--especially over a glass of wine and cheese with good friends.

Great inside look at the restaurant world from the server's eye view. Well written, interesting and insightful. Should be required reading for the many manners-challenged people who forget The Golden Rule whenever they step into a restaurant.

If you're looking for a triumphal revisionist account of the link between Tammany Hall and the Irish-American vote in the 19tg and early 20th centuries, then this is the book for you. Unfortunately, that wasn't was I was looking for and so it was something of a disappointment. Not that I was looking for yet another diatribe about Tammany corruption. Instead, I was hoping for a more nuts and bolts look at how the machine operated--similar to the sort of study of the accumulation, use and loss of power that Robert Caro did so successfully in his studies of Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson. Hopefully this author or someone else will get there.
