Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

a thought-provoking book.
Revisado: 11-26-22
I really enjoyed this book. many thoughts and interesting perspectives are presented. I love the condensation of history and the discussion of the various revolutions: conceptual, agricultural, industrial, etc. I also appreciated the analysis towards the end. Clearly the author has a political perspective and it may offend some people. However, listen to it, characterize it as you will and try to separate the implied conclusions from reasonable conclusions based on the evidence presented. I would like to have seen more discussion, obviously speculation, about the potential evolution of intelligence by the purely machine-based mechanism. especially with the discussion of the singularity. That term is generally more associated with artificial intelligence, than simpler cybernetic evolution.

Space travel just isn't what it used to be. With the invention of quantum teleportation, space heroes aren't needed anymore. When one particularly unlucky ex-adventurer masquerades as famous pilot and hate figure Jacques McKeown, he's sucked into an ever-deepening corporate and political intrigue. Between space pirates, adorable deadly creatures, and a missing fortune in royalties, saving the universe was never this difficult!

kind of Discworld to in space
Revisado: 10-20-22
overall a very enjoyable read. plays a lot with classic tropes of the golden age of science fiction. but his self-aware enough to keep the satire up. the reader narrator does a good job with the emotional inflection of the characters. so, I would recommend it to anyone who likes books or, Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy.

To take a skeptical approach to American history is not to dabble in imaginative conspiracy theories; rather, it's to reframe your understanding of this great nation's past and actually strengthen your appreciation for what makes American history such a fascinating chapter in the larger story of Western civilization. And in this bold 24-lecture series, you can do just that.

a new Fresh perspective on American history
Revisado: 09-22-22
I appreciated this perspective on American historical mythology. I think any listener will recognize all of the popular myths that are brought forward. most rational readers with an open mind can appreciate the modern perspective and scholarship that's bringing brought to bear. whether you agree or disagree with the conclusions that are reached, the additional information as well as the different perspective provides additional context for which to either accept or reject some of those mythologies. overall a very thoughtful work and I highly recommend it. the only real criticism I have, is that the professor himself tended to sometimes or I should say often stumble over his notes in presenting the information.

Historia
Sci-fi's favorite antisocial AI is back on a mission. The case against the too-big-to-fail GrayCris Corporation is floundering, and more importantly, authorities are beginning to ask more questions about where Dr. Mensah's SecUnit is. And Murderbot would rather those questions went away. For good. Martha Wells' Rogue Protocol is the third in the Murderbot Diaries series, starring a humanlike android who keeps getting sucked back into adventure after adventure, though it just wants to be left alone, away from humanity and small talk.

love me some murderbot.
Revisado: 08-30-22
this was a short story. maybe just a little under 4 hours long listening to. but as usual action-packed and filled with murderbot sarcasm. I particularly like the sort of meta approach where the story of one of the media plays facing Biologicals or other combatants played out in the story.

The planet is called Banshee. The air is unbreathable, the water poisonous. It is the home of the most implacable enemies that humanity, in all its interstellar expansion, has ever encountered. Felix is a scout in A-team Two. Highly competent, he is the sole survivor of mission after mission. Yet he is a man consumed by fear and hatred.

best sequel to starship troopers never written.
Revisado: 08-08-19
a somewhat modern take on the classic mentality of starship troopers. not as much focus on the Spartan government and overall audiology. but I couldn't go focus on the militaristic mindset, as well as a realistic view of what that mindset can be generated from and how it and painted itself upon the people involved in the conflict. both an emotionally starring novel, as well as an intellectually intriguing one. highly recommended read or listen in either case.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

engrossing story. Deeply developed characters.
Revisado: 02-25-18
it is a very well develop novel. Extensive character development both with the children and the children as adults. The novel is quite long but the narrator does an excellent job of representing the emotions and feelings of the characters in the story. It's probably one of the best narrated books on tape that I've listened to. I really appreciate this guy's talents and efforts to make this book come to life.

Historia
On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Quite a way to start thinking about thinking
Revisado: 06-03-05
I really enjoyed the way this book mixed some detail about neuroscience with the man's theories. Overall, the book is a really good listen but it kind of dies out just when it starts to apply the framework to try to explain 'why things are' and that is one of the most empowering aspects of a theory or general framework. It was kinda like losing power just when the movie approached the climax. Nutshell: thoroughly enjoyable way to 'dive' into thinking about intelligence.
