Historia
First published in 1873, The Gilded Age is both a biting satire and a revealing portrait of post-Civil War America - an age of corruption when crooked land speculators, ruthless bankers, and dishonest politicians voraciously took advantage of the nation's peacetime optimism. With his characteristic wit and perception, Mark Twain and his collaborator, Charles Dudley Warner, attack the greed, lust, and naiveté of their own time in a work that endures as a valuable social document and one of America's most important satirical novels.

The Master of Satire!
Revisado: 09-03-23
Twain & coauthor tell an enchanting tale rich in history and humor. His use of regional dialects and his ability to poke fun at humans of every kind is always hilarious. Twain leaves no political entity un-roasted nor any profession without caricature. The performance on this audio book is superb with many great voices and a narrator who must be none other than Samuel Clemens himself!!

A Dear Old Friend
Revisado: 05-04-21
I first read Celia Garth as a fourteen year old with my best friend on a quest to read every work of fiction in our school's small library. I connected to the book because my two old maid aunts lived in Charleston & it quickly became one of my favorite cities for extended visits during summer break. They entertained me with tours of the historic area around the battery, the local plantation gardens, the islands, & the wonderful restaurants. I was happy to find & reconnect with Celia on Audible.

It’s 2020 and the world seems terribly wrong & evil. However, this story of the good people of Newfoundland restores my faith that there are still good people in the world

Loved this Book!
Revisado: 04-21-18
I laughed & cried through the hard copy & enjoyed it so much I wanted to share it with my non-reader friend. I tricked him into listening to the Audible version while on a long road trip & he was also hooked! The narrator did a great job of capturing the many voices. The story is so wonderfully woven, the characters as real as my family & friends. Webber understands children, she understands small towns & she understands Southerners. As other reviewers have said about The Wiregrass, as I read it, I was reminded of To Kill A Mockingbird: funny story, seriously important topic. I hope that this book helps to open eyes to the oppressed & abused.
I truly hope this book is turned into a screen play for a movie. I will be first in line to see it!!
Congratulations, Pam Webber, on a great novel. I’m looking forward to your next one!
