Historia
Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Revisado: 03-27-25
I kept waiting for this author's magic. It never came. This was a boring waste of time. I can't even finish it and of course, as it happens, I cannot return it. What a disappointment. I have recommended his books on many occasions, but this one should come with a frustrated yawn warning.

Historia
On paper, Gemma's life is just like any other successful, single thirtysomething. Her students adore her. She lives in a cute beachside cottage next door to the world's sweetest neighbor, Margie. And she's definitely caught the eye of Karim, the resident hot PE teacher at her school. But every day of her life, she can't get one thing out of her mind: the baby she gave up for adoption when Gemma was just sixteen years old. This is the year that Baby--the only name Gemma has for her little girl--will turn eighteen. And it might be the year she actually meets her daughter face-to-face.

I love Debbie Johnson but I hate this book
Revisado: 02-14-25
This was not for me.It was a very long, tedious journey by a character who needs counseling. I really almost couldn't finish it. I love Debbie's books because of the characters she develops. The only two even remotely interesting characters in this book did not make up for the self-indulgent angst of the main character. I have already pre-ordered her next book, but if you are expecting a Comfor Food Cafe or Starshine Cove type of experience, this isn't it.

Historia
Esme Cahill thinks she has failed spectacularly: fired from her New York City publishing job, divorced from her husband, and possessing little more than a broken-down car and a pile of unfinished manuscripts, she drives home to Asheville at the request of her late grandmother, Adele, who had begged her, just before she died, to return to the place she grew up. There she discovers the once-charming lakeside retreat run by her family is sliding toward financial ruin.

Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

I am in love with this book!
Revisado: 01-14-24
At first I didn't like the narrator's voice but soon I realized that I believed it was the old man telling the story and it completely made sense. I love this book so much that I think of it often. I feel connected to the giraffes in a way that is hard to explain. I almost felt like this book changed my life a little for the better, the way a really good book can do. I will read or listen to this one again. Thank heaven's for Lofty and Patches and the people who managed to get them there. I also like the fact that the only license the author took with the facts of the giraffes was the fictional story of the two men. Instead of making me feel like the author was trying to skew history, I thought that this was a great example of historical fiction-true facts with an added story for interest that doesn't change the facts or the history. Read this book.

Historia
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.

I have now listened to this book twice. It is so good and it is even better the second time. The characters are very believable and I absolutely loved Osla's vernacular. This is a remarkable story and even more remarkable because it is based on fact.
