Wonderful human being!
Revisado: 02-25-23
Peter is inspirational! Coming from humble and traumatic circumstances, with intelligence and strength, he not only overcame but excelled in life. His family is fortunate to have him and he is fortunate to have them. The readers voice was easy to understand and calming.

Historia
Mike Rinder’s parents began taking him to their local Scientology center when he was five years old. After high school, he signed a billion-year contract and was admitted into Scientology’s elite inner circle, the Sea Organization. Brought to founder L. Ron Hubbard’s yacht and promised training in Hubbard’s most advanced techniques, Rinder was instead put to work swabbing the decks. Still, Rinder bought into the doctrine that his personal comfort was secondary to the higher purpose of Hubbard’s world-saving mission.

Horrors in the name of religion
Revisado: 10-27-22
Violence in the name of religion is nothing new, but this book is a real eye opener. As a boomer who read one of Hubbards books years ago, I was not impressed by the quality of his work and read nothing else written by him. Mike’s voice was perfect for the narrative and really explained how so many got sucked into this “religion”. I wish him a calm future full of family, dna not required.

Historia
Enveloped in the dark inner kingdom of her schizophrenia, 16-year-old Deborah is haunted by private tormentors that isolate her from the outside world. With the reluctant and fearful consent of her parents, she enters a mental hospital where she will spend the next three years battling to regain her sanity with the help of a gifted psychiatrist. As Deborah struggles toward the possibility of the "normal" life she and her family hope for, the listener is inexorably drawn into her private suffering and deep determination to confront her demons.

Better the second time.
Revisado: 03-21-22
I first read this book in the late 1960s as a teenager. At 70, with the lifetime experiences of an adult, it is so much better. We know so much more about mental health now, and it shows. Yet the compassion and work to be “mentally healthy” remains constant. Please read.
