I found this book to be one of the most enlightening discussions of the Black nuns ever. Up until several years ago, I too thought there was no such thing as African-American nuns. And honestly, there is barely any evidence that they exist today until now. It is disheartening to learn that the main Christian religion in this country was also one of the main proponents of discriminatory practices and that it still has such a long way to go. I'm also surprised that only two ratings have been published for this book, leading me to believe that there is not really a lot of interest on all sides to learn about these courageous women. I am grateful and thankful for the author for even doing such a book and now proudly own a soft copy.

Let's get the cons out the way first....

CONS:
The references are quite dated, but what would you expect from something originally written in 1925 and in about two years, will be 100 years old!

There are many assumptions regarding women's roles in a man's success or Native Americans' benefits from the white man or even how people of color are depicted (referred to as Negroes and such) can be a bit difficult to get through but again...refer to my first Con point regarding this.

Also too, based on the time of the writing, many of the successful men mentioned and interviewed are not without their debauchery in benefiting from the privilege their skin color afforded them. Again, cite my first CON point. While I wished there were more people of color cited (the author does mention W. E. B. Dubois, Fredrick Douglas, and a couple of others, I believe), there was a lot of focus of the "giants of industry" back then, so totally understanding.

Having said all of that...even the smallest iota of self help, motivational speaking, and self improvement in the modern age owes it's origin to this very book!!! The PRO is the book itself and the lasting knowledge that lies within. While listening to this book, I heard phrases, sentences, whole concept stated that I know I have heard throughout my life but never truly bothered to understand the information given or thought it was just "crazy talk" or "advice from people whom shouldn't be giving advice", etc. Boy was I clueless!!!

There are 16 lessons that are rooted in common sense but the wonderment for me comes from the fact that these very concepts STILL come into to play today...almost a 100 years later.

This is quite literally the last self-help book that I intend to buy. I need no more because all of these concepts are discussed in so many other books, speeches, essays etc...that you would basically be getting the same information. This book will force you (if you approach it with an open mind and heart) to get into action. The chapters on SELF-CONFIDENCE, ART OF SAVING, A DEFINITE CHIEF AIM, TOLERANCE, CONCENTRATION, SELF-CONTROL, ENTHUSIASM, and the GOLDEN RULE are actually worth two or three listening (which I have done for about 3 of them).

It's amazing how, when present a certain way, the same information that you have heard over and over again suddenly resonates. From a book that was written almost a century ago that I'm pretty sure was not easily accessible for someone like me at the time, I am beyond grateful I am able to absorb it's wisdom now.

I applaud the author's efforts from the future.

We all can benefit from reading this book! I will revisit again in the future.

So, before I plunged into this book, I read a lot of the reviews (both positive and negative) about this book. I admit I am still plowing through it and I'm almost done but I've listened to enough to give a solid review. A lot of what is in this book I knew already, although when voiced, it was shouted down, ridiculed, or worst...from all areas. And I did feel that the book thoroughly addressed the correlation between "race" and "caste" in this country, but offered no solid suggestions on how to move from this system. Then, I started thinking...it really doesn't need to nor is that the book's purpose.

The issue of the social construct known as "race" is so complex, so thick, so deep that to expect this one book to have the answer to fixing it is simply ridiculous. What this book really does is give you all the information you need to make an informed decision on how you deal with "race" going forward. People in this country from all sides have been domesticated into believing this system is "normal" so much for so long that most do believe you are loosing something by eliminating the need to label and separated based on skin color alone.

This book is hard to read in some places...it simply is the undoctor truth and it's hard to swallow. But this is a must read for everyone and should be required reading in schools.

I've listened to a lot of self improvement books and new to ones on love. I've listened to books on love languages and getting love you need etc, but none really hits like this one. Bishop just has a way of cutting through the BS and making you look at yourself to be better for you as well as others. Another re-read is in the future.

Any book that is can make you agree wholeheartedly and disagree wholeheartedly simultaneously is worth being in my library. I only have about 90 minutes left on it but I think based on what I've absorbed thus far, I can make a fair review. While overall the information is solid in regards to how to conduct yourself as a "Superior" man, let's take some of this stuff with a bit of a grain of salt and your own interpretation.

There are parts of this book that definitely speaks to me as a man trying to still navigate these waters known as life, even in my early 50's. However, some of this information comes off basically like "Excuse your woman in everything she does, love anyway...ignoring your own feelings because she will drown in your love for her, acknowledge your feelings internally but not to your woman in it's purest form but in a way that palatable to her. "

HUH?!?

I'm pretty sure I am a little bit off base with my opinion on this, but it does come off like that. I realize that women in general will not think and feel like we do and vice versa; however, I do not know if allowing her to be fulling in her feelings in the moment and then accepting that she will not do the same for you because she's of feminine power sounds like BS to the highest order.

Nevertheless, in my next relationship, I am willing to apply some of these "suggestions" (side-eye toward the word "tricks" being a more accurate term) to see if I can have a more intimate connection and relationship with my partner.

Again, the book thus far is pretty good at advice toward being a better man and relating to the world better, but I don't know about the woman-centric stuff. Doesn't seem very balanced; however, I guess then it would be called "The Way of the Superior Couple?" I'm sure there are better books that give advice on how men and women can relate to themselves better, but with this being geared toward men, I suppose the women-centric talking points are understandable in that regard.

Read this, then read John Kim's "I Use to be a Miserable F*ck", since he was inspired to change his life by reading "The Way of the Superior Man".

This was by far the most enlightening read I have ever had. This book attempts to give much needed context to how society has come to function and really should be part of any serious American History curriculum.

The reviews that focus on the "fake Asian accent" that the narrator sometimes employ during this audiobook are too busy seeing the trees and not the forest...meaning that they are focusing on the method of delivery and not what is being delivered. I too laughed at the accent at first until I realize he was trying to say things as only Bruce Lee could say them to add more weight to what was being said. And for me, it did just that. This is an excellent book that echoes many of my own philosophies of how I view myself in relationship to society, family, friends, my partner and myself. JKD is something that I am going to start following as much as I can and a lot of the philosophy that I picked up from this book regarding Bruce's writings and ideals I will continue to study and learn from. Thank you.

I loved this book. I was a preteen to teenager during the Mid South era and it was great listening to these stories and how he rose up basically through hard work, an incredible work ethic, and being friendly and outgoing enough for many a wrestler to come an trust him. JR showed he was all too human, just like me, but a certifiable giant in the wrestling industry. He made many of my favorite wrestlers; Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Bret Hart, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, the Undertaker, Mick Folley, also incredibly human as they are, with some of the same doubt and insecurities that we all have. That's just something you cannot get from the 10 - 60 minutes per week that you invest in these characters.

I will definitely listen to this again.
