Enamored by the introduction read, I was very excited for this book. Stephen Cubby and his father both have very pronounced influences in the self-help book realm, and most know of Stephen Curry’s father book 7 habits of highly effective people.

Unfortunately, this book falls short to its predecessors and author’s father in many ways. It is difficult to listen to as the narrative style feels more like banging your head on the wall for eighth Street hours the cadence is exactly the same and the style similar well, Steven does have a captivating voice , his narration skills make this a very difficult listen. Also, the chapters are drawn out excessively so hearing the same phrases over and over one often feels compelled to just quit listening as the repetitive nature becomes so mundane it is hard to clean any new information that is introduced into the book.

However, I couldn’t bring myself to stop listening. And much like a woman in labor for eight grueling hours I listen to Steven MR Coveys entire book and definitely gleaned wisdom. The book definitely starts introducing new and innovative, quotes and ways of looking at things near halfway through the book. Well, not an editor myself, I do think that this book could’ve been edited down quite a bit for maximum impact.

Ultimately, I’m not disappointed that I made it through the book. As the information was useful, and there was plenty of golden nuggets throughout yet the arduous trek to listen to the whole thing in order to find the Golden Nuggets leaves me hesitant to tell anyone that they must read it for fear that they would not make it all the way through.

3.5/5 stars for sure- a worthwhile read, if you have the patience and the mental stamina to deal with it.

Gagins is the mentality that more people in this world needs. Our lives of mediocrity are feed and nursed by an ever weakening society. This book is the second edition to the antidote that we all need.

To be honest. I have been looking forward to this second book like a kid towards Christmas. Gagins is an inspiration, what he has done with his life is amazing. And putting it out on the line for all to see and benefit from his successes and failures is life altering.

Critically this book is a 8.5/10 only because it seems more like an “encore” to his first book, than actually new material.
That said, when put up against and in comparison to “Can’t Hirt Me”; the content to ‘be your best self’ - this book takes the cake. Easy 10/10. It is better written, better narrated and better edited. The words are more powerfully conveyed and moving as you listen.

I love it, and even though I will likely never meet this man, his powerful example will be a driving force in my own life.
Special thank you Sr Goggins, you and your hard work is inspiring.

It’s difficult to follow a legendary book as “How to win friends and Influence People”
While they gave a good stab at it, ultimately the book wasn’t as good. A fun listen, yes. But pales in comparison to the original.

To be honest I wanted to give this book a lower rating. But I can’t. The book is really good.
If I am being critical, I hate how “deeply emotional” his stories are. I feel a lot like watching a Netflix series. Every chapter comes with some “dire circumstance” which Oren finds himself in. He goes to great lengths to try and keep the emotions tense. And by the end of the chapter, the protagonists win, he sums up his point, then onto the next chapter with another “gripping plot line”. Each consist of the exact same things.
By about halfway I just wanted to quit. Because the storytelling gets old. Every chapter you know they are going to come out on top, and you just wish he would get on with it.

But to be fair, he displays his expertise in a very different way. This book has a great organization, and while he goes too far in trying to keep you emotionally active, none of the book is “fluf” like so many of the garbage popular books out there (you know the ones, those that celebrities write that are pure hot steaming garbage)

Oren know his stuff. The book is entertaining. And the concepts are definitely enlightening.
Overall 4.2/5 stars. A worthwhile read.

I have always been enamored with Petersons work. His verbiage is precise and delivery is powerful. Once he came out with this book, it was a must read for me.

First, it should be noted, this book takes a very heavy hand with Biblical philosophy. If anyone is offended by the mentioning of biblical verses and corresponding interpretations, it may be tough to get through for you. Jordan does an amazing job at tying in other philosophical ideas, both professional and from other cultures.

This book is not an “easy read” often times while listening, if you miss a sentence or two you get lost. I feel much more like a college class than a passive listen. This must be taken into consideration in order to fully absorb its concepts.

Overall this book is amazing. Without a doubt there are many great books, and this one should be regarded as one of them. Each concept is thoughtfully presented. No space is wasted in its explanation. It’s particularly enjoyable to have such precision in word choices, and to have each of the rules presented in depth and with so much thought. This book is literally a breath of fresh air in comparison to the random garbage so often published.

Let me first let you know where I come from. I read at least one to two books a week. Topics that frequent my library range from managing self, to business, relationships, communication, and beyond - there are plenty of key, pivotal books out there. I regret to report, this isn’t one of them. While it is an insightful read, it’s not life changing.

As an associate to a dental practice, we picked this book up to improve our business. The owner of the partnership purchased the paperback version for the whole team, and we have started to implement its principles. Truly, it’s content isn’t “bad” - it just isn’t great.

Most of the concepts are half baked. They are thought provoking, it’s true, but they fail to really drive the point home. The paperback version of the book is not at all concise and this audiobook is even less so. I had to re-read the paperback and almost re-format it in order to get its points across. Often times literally re-phrasing paragraphs in order to make them more impactful and memorable.

An example being the ABC principal. Which then is given three terms, irritating, okay or fascinating. The principal is good, but the real impact is left in oblivion.
Really the ABC should either be rephrased to something like “Awful, Boring and Captivating” or the ABC concept shouldn’t be brought in at all, because it’s just another principal to remember that is clunky in transition and hard to recall.

Other parts of the book go down nuances of word play leaving you wanting to either argue with word choices or read between the lines to apply his ideas. One such chapter guaranteeing unhappiness if you focus on the future, promising only happiness if you do three wins of accomplishment that day. Again, as I attempt to gain as much as I can, I had to rephrase his wording, and apply different word plays from the audio version to more aptly apply it’s principle. Which, in my opinion, should have been done before publication, not left to the reader to do.
Unfortunately the first six chapters (out of eight) are all this way in some form or another. I literally had to re-write the book in order to extract and make its concepts memorable.

Unfortunately this isn’t the worst of it. Really this whole “book” is focused on what I find as a self defeating mindset, and it becomes painfully obvious in the audio version. This “I want to work for myself. I’m an entrepreneur to be free and earn lots of money” bleeds through almost every concept. To many, this is inspiring. Because owning your own company, managing your own business, and reaping the rewards are all awesome parts of being a business owner. But when that becomes one’s focus, it becomes self serving, and quite honestly it’s obvious to anyone who has two minutes to conceptually reflect on the things portrayed. Taken to the extreme, if everyone had this mentality, there wouldn’t be anyone who could be part of a team, leaving all “business” to ruin.

The reason this book doesn’t tank completely is because
1- it’s principles are quite enlightening. On paper, the concepts are good. They are, in fact, helpful to business and owners alike to think differently.
2- the last two chapters are much more ‘hit home’ principles. The reader can tell that his heart is actually in these last concepts. Focusing on living life to its fullest and trying to live longer to make a more impact on the world is a great “live life” concept that really saves this book.

Ultimately, it’s a decent read. And at $5 for the audio and $2 for the kindle, it is worth going through. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to seek its information.

It wasn’t what I was expecting. I felt like most of the book became a social lecture rather than a helpful analysis of how we could become more empathetic.

Up through chapter 5 I was riveted. Seriously broken at chapter 5. With how well it ripped at ones hear strings. Then chapter six and seven went on a tirade of social issues of which he not only feels strongly about (which is obvious in the texts) but offers little more than “we know this … (fact here)” with little to offer on what he wants to do about it.

Which is what brings me to why this book truly fell so short. Aside from a social and philosophical lecture for the latter half of the book (which I am more than willing to listen to and learn from) there is no substance on what we need to do in order to better our own empathy. Stories and studies vaguely point to possible solutions, but on a personal level and one who is engrained in my community’s workings, I have little to actually implement other than cute stories, heart wrenching experiences and vague knowledge on what worked.

I really wanted to have a great book. But this one seriously wasn’t it.

Great read. Love the mentality shift and the willingness to realize that life will never truly have an “end game” metric. Truly a one of a kind book that is willing to address a less than popular topic.

Only criticism is, it’s a bit long winded. While thinking if I could improve it, not really sure how, but sometimes I wish we could just get to the point.

Overall it’s a worthwhile listen and a great share to friends or family.
