Marlin Bree is a storyteller for the ages. His newsy, matter of fact style, born of Midwestern news ink and interwoven with the romance and mystery of the last great lake make this a fireside read worth repeating time and again. A genuine American treasure.

This piece was editorially, unnecessarily sensational while at the same time rationalizing of the close, daily and, at times, manipulative and dishonest relationship as between the author and her subject. In fairness, it was so saccherine, I could not finish it. It proclaimed to be brave journalism when it should have been embarassed. I guess this is what passes for gonzo journalism today: effete, connected socialite with access to Epstein genuflects for daily access, wiretaps phone conversations, and explains away the softball tenor with a purported desire to obtain the scoop and a more than occasional footnote to remind listeners it was too pre-metoo to be too confrontational. Not convinced this is anything but hobby journalism for an elite New Yorker who had unaccidental access to the uber rich.

Marlin Bree: brilliant Lake Superior storyteller

Marlin Bree spins a brilliant yarn about his midlife sailboat building project, Persistence, and concomitant quests to put it and himself to the definitive test on Lake Superior. His journalistic flair owing to years of newspaper experience and the tidbit facts about quirky locals and the industrial history of the lake, sometimes deadly and always rugged, make this book a must read for Lake Superior adventurers or even harbor hoppers like myself.

I am not in a position to judge the author's wartime experience and I don't even wish to shame him for his allegiance to a vanquished German Navy. He was clearly indoctrinated and educated as an elite submariner only to be on the losing side at the end of the war, one of only 56 to claim the prize for first US Navy capture of an enemy vessel since 1812. However, while heavy burdens were placed on the author psychologically and agonizingly at such a young age (he explicitly states that he agonized over his own self perceived role in allowing U505 to fall into US Navy hands) the author's fragile yet outsized ego interferes with the story line by constant rationalization, editorial interjection, and narcissism-- a lot of "l's" and "me's"-- that call into question the factual authenticity of his accounts.
