great story read it first but the narrators were a poor choice

I read this series before buying the audio and absolutely loved it the entire time. the narrators kinda kill the audio book for me though. they're supposed to be like 18 year old main characters but everyone sounds 45. and it's not a dig against these two narrators personally I've listened to and enjoyed their work before, both of them. Just not a good fit for this series. that's my opinion though

the best part of this book is everything from the first word to the last word. I don't write a lot of reviews but I'm currently devastated that I have to stop and I felt people should know.

I don't know if I just didn't let it bother me before but the 3 or 4 word bursts the narrator talks in is driving me nuts. every sentence is. broken up repeatedly. for seemingly no reason. a lot of. times.

there are some definite cultural differences that are involved with reading a Russian authors book, but this one is pretty good. most importantly ignore the review of the guy with zero reading comprehension that doesn't understand the plot.

The plot is very straightforward I literally have no idea how he got confused. slight spoiler here but just proof of what im saying. yes mc left the school with a group, group immediately abandons him and he goes back to rescue a friend at the schools dorms who calls for help. that's it.

overall it's a decent story though with good characters. honest review is probably an 8/10

the fights lasted literally hours, it seriously got excessive and I feel like they could have easily been cut in half, so the book actually progressed in story

so the story is alright, Bruce Sentar is normally awesome but this series is a bit TOO horny. feels like a sex scene every 30 minutes which. kind of pulls you out of the story at the current frequency. But hey if the sex is what you're after then you'll love this book

gritty, dark, anti-hero mc in a harsh brutal world

I personally can't wait for the second book. its not for the feint of heart, but it isn't gratuitous with the gore. there are some horrific injuries and visuals that might make some uncomfortable and that's okay, the mc hates a lot of what happens too.

there are also a lot of nice parts as well, not all doom and gloom.

you would think that writing an entire book at least SOMETHING would have concluded. not even the freaking letter got delivered. author jumped around between characters like a freshly launched pinball. it would be different if a single aspect had been concluded. the tournament that has been spoken of for 2 books? never see it. The entire book a sect looks for the mc to deliver a message but never finds him. simply annoying.

meh all the way around. narrator was terrible.

Series somehow managed to spend 30+ hours and have nothing happen. it doesn't even make sense for a large plot point. Character doesn't try to get stronger because when you get stronger it throws off your control. but he has nothing but time to practice control. I'm probably as bored about hearing the same month on repeat as the mc is.
