Historia
Doris Grandfelt, an employee at an accounting firm, was brutally stabbed to death . . . but nobody knew exactly where the crime took place. Her body was found the next night, dumped among a dense thicket of trees along the edge of an urban park, eight miles east of St. Paul, Minnesota. Despite her twin sister Lara Grandfelt’s persistent calls to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the killer was never found.

Sequel setup
Revisado: 04-02-25
Clearly incomplete so a setup for a sequel. Otherwise well done and worthwhile so I would still recommend.

Historia
Here, for the first time, in a brilliant, panoramic portrait by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb, is the definitive, often shocking story of the politics and the science behind the development of the hydrogen bomb and the birth of the Cold War. Based on secret files in the United States and the former Soviet Union, this monumental work of history discloses how and why the United States decided to create the bomb that would dominate world politics for more than forty years.

OK if you like politics, not good for the science
Revisado: 12-08-24
Had mostly politics and background and a lot about the Soviet spy ring during Manhattan. Not very much on the actual building of the hydrogen bombs. If you like spy stuff and political background, you will like this. If you want technical and scientific background, you should look elsewhere.
Basically a pale shadow of his original "The Making of the Atomic Bomb"

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Good, but not as good as I expected
Revisado: 11-20-23
Although it is overall a good book (novella) I have three issues with it:
1) Economic: It is good that I got it via Audible Plus because 3 hours of anything is not worth a full credit.
2) Overall content: It was good, easily 4 stars, but IMHO falls short of the awards it has gotten. I expected better based on the awards.
3) Narration, overall OK but not outstanding. The use of the wrong pronunciation and meaning (homographs) is becoming all too common with narrators these days and indicates that although they may be good actors/narrators otherwise, their educations (and that of their producers/editors) are somewhat lacking if they make these mistakes.

Historia
The transcontinental railroads of the late 19th century were the first corporate behemoths. Their attempts to generate profits from proliferating debt sparked devastating panics in the US economy. Their dependence on public largess drew them into the corridors of power, initiating new forms of corruption. Their operations rearranged space and time, and remade the landscape of the West. As wheel and rail, car and coal, they opened new worlds of work and ways of life.

Great if you like Politics/Finance otherwise not
Revisado: 07-07-23
Mostly about the politics and financial dealings related to building the railroads. If you are looking for physical details or technical details - look elsewhere. I gave up on this one.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Day of Infamy: In the bloodiest island combat of WWII, one group of men kept watch from behind Japanese lines. The Solomon Islands was where the Allied war machine finally broke the Japanese empire. As pilots, marines, and sailors fought for supremacy in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and the Slot, a lonely group of radio operators occupied the Solomon Islands' highest points. Sometimes encamped in comfort, sometimes exposed to the elements, these coastwatchers kept lookout for squadrons of Japanese bombers headed for Allied positions.

Not Lucas, Not Virgil, Not all that great
Revisado: 04-26-22
I was interested when I heard the book was going to be about Lettie but I was soon disappointed. It is just not what I read JS for. I like the Midwest locations (having grown up there), this was (yuk) Texas. I like the humor (especially Virgil), this had little. I am not fond of politics (either side), this had lots. This book had almost nothing I listen to JS for.
Please do not think that this is about a female lead since that is untrue on steroids (but a typical knee-jerk reaction). I love characters like Honor Harrington and Jessica Blackwood and Sloan McPherson. In fact, I think that this book might have been better with a female narrator. Not great, mind you, that would not have made up for the other deficiencies.
I do see that JS will be returning to Lucas and Virgil for the next book. Please keep it that way!

Historia
In the aftermath of a world war with China, Admiral Dan Lenson is assigned to set up a US Navy base on the rugged North Slope of Alaska, in response to Russian seabed claims that reach nearly to the US coast. Yet the current administration seems oddly reluctant to confront Russian aggression. At the same time, the International Criminal Court is accusing Dan of a war crime.

Book is OK, narrator is awful
Revisado: 01-24-22
I have been listening to Poyer's stuff for a long time but finally gave up on this book and will not be buying another. This is 90% due to the terrible narrator! It is hard to describe how awful he is but it will not take the listener more than 30 seconds of the sample to know what I mean.

Historia
Dr. Neil Anson Clemons was born at the very moment that men first landed on the moon and always strived to become an astronaut and reach the stars. Neil devoted his life to staying physically fit as any astronaut should be through martial arts and mentally fit by studying and becoming one of the world's foremost experts in quantum physics and gravitational theory. Now he and his team have achieved a breakthrough, both in building a warp drive, and finding a new energy source powerful enough to make the drive more than an interesting theoretical concept.

Great idea ruined by too much of a few things
Revisado: 09-12-20
The overall concept and broad plot are great but were ruined by several elements:
1) Too much detailed talk about specific sports - obviously those of interest to the author
2) Overdone southern accent and manner of the primary character
3) Too much political opinion - again obviously those of the author
