Historia
When Jackie Schuld’s therapist suggested she might be autistic, she scoffed. She knew there was no way she could be autistic. She was in her mid-30s and ran her own therapy private practice. Everything she learned about autism in her Master’s program in mental health counseling didn’t apply to her. She could make excellent eye contact. She could engage in deep conversations. She could attend social gatherings. She could make it through abrupt changes and remain flexible. How could she be autistic? The more she learned about autism — how it internally impacts autistics and how it can...

Delightful and effective
Revisado: 02-18-22
I'm pleasantly surprised by my somewhat random purchase of this audible book. I've been learning Spanish off and on for a few years now with apps like Babel and a few books. Living in south FL for some time also acclimated me to hearing the language frequently, and I'm accustomed to the sound and pronunciations of many words - I just didn't understand much of it, and certainly couldn't speak more than a few small sentences and numbers. I've recently signed up with an online group course with a real teacher. While that is well worth the money spent, I decided taking on alternative methods of learning into account, and thought something to listen to while I take my daily walks would be helpful.
I liked the concept of the "earworm" - I love music, and walking, so just wanted something fun and pleasant that would help me inculcate the Spanish I have been learning into my brain while I strolled about getting my exercise. This is perfect. The music is nice to listen to and goes well with the tempo of my steps. The voices are lovely. I enjoy the small bits of laughter, as if the actors are having fun with this.
This is definitely helping supplement my online sessions w/ my tutor. But I really wish a written PDF companion was more available. It helps to see the words written and unfortunately I can't find a written version either here on Audible or the company website (which is not the most usable, I'm afraid).

Why We're Polarized

Historia
In Why We’re Polarized, Klein reveals the structural and psychological forces behind America’s descent into division and dysfunction. Neither a polemic nor a lament, this book offers a clear framework for understanding everything from Trump’s rise to the Democratic Party’s leftward shift to the politicization of everyday culture. America is polarized, first and foremost, by identity. Everyone engaged in American politics is engaged, at some level, in identity politics.

Redemption is possible
Revisado: 11-24-21
if you've ever struggled to understand or talk to friends, family or coworkers over matters of politics, regardless of party, then start here. Understanding the incentives beneath what appears to be a broken system that seems to leave the vast majority of moderate Americans out of the picture will help us to - at the very least, not hate each other. It could even help us understand our own motivations and become more calmly aware of our predisposition to align ourselves into factions of identity that benefit our own group, but deny other groups.
Written by an admittedly liberal, vegan Californian, this is not a liberal book. it's a reasoned take o. our system today and offers creative ideas to remedy it in such a way that the greatest swath of American people would benefit, and perhaps release our elected officials from a mechanism that only encourages division and the perception that government does not work for normal people.

Historia
The shift toward automation is about to create a tsunami of unemployment. Not in the distant future - now. One recent estimate predicts 13 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next seven years - jobs that won't be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society? In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation software are making millions of Americans' livelihoods irrelevant.

Not left. Not right. But forward.
Revisado: 08-24-19
It doesn't matter what party you subscribe to, or where on the party spectrum you align with. It doesn't matter if you have no party affiliation at all. It doesn't matter if you voted for our current president or not. It doesn't matter if will vote for him again, or if you'll vote for whoever can beat him, whether it's Yang or not.
The data, reasoning and clear-headed thinking in this book applies to all of us. This book is the most hopeful book on hopelessness you'll ever read. Yang is a calm, humble visionary who sees the real problems in our society and has fresh new ways to fix them.
While our circus of a 2 party system keeps parading out the same old tired tropes, Yang is the real alternative.

this book is really well done and well performed. I decided to take this on at the same time as The Whole30 in order to cleanse my mind and my system of things that were poisoning me. I don't consider myself an alcoholic, but a lot of people in my family are, and alcohol weaves itself in and out of my life and my marriage quite frequently. It's a substance that hurts everything around me and I decided that it shouldn't be in my life anymore. So I took on this book with some skepticism, cuz I don't think the whole Alcoholics Anonymous applies to me, since I don't feel like I belong in that camp. But this really spoke to me, it's well-researched scientific and at the same time inspirational. There are no unrealistic expectations, it doesn't make you feel guilty, and it gives you real world examples of people have done this and have succeeded. I highly recommend this book. I am on day 7 of this, and I feel amazing. I don't feel like I need this substance in order to have fun in my life life, or to sleep. It's an awkward adjustment, but this book really gives you strength. I am so clear-headed, calm, and serene that I have no desire to go back. I can walk by a whole entire aisle of beer and wine and not feel a pull. I feel energetic every single morning, even tho my sleep patterns aren't quite yet. I used alcohol to self-medicate during times of stress, reward for having an effective day, or just to sleep. I really use it to sleep. I have insomnia and it's really hard. But this just made it worse. And the way I feel in the morning now as compared to when I did when I would have a drink before I would go to bed is Light Years. Even if I slept harder and longer with a drink in my system, and I sleep less if I don't have that drink, I feel 100 times better in the morning for it. I get up earlier, I do a lot more things in the morning, like walk my dog and take care of things in the house before I go to work, I work out, and at night, I have so much more room to do things when I don't have alcohol in my system like read and study for what I need to know in my career. This is really showing me something different and new on a whole other level. Thank you Annie for a wonderful book.

Fantastic story about a modern genius
Revisado: 04-26-18
one of the most inspiring stories I have ever read. Elon Musk is pure determination and brilliance. the book was done well, narrated well, and it's an amazing fast paced story of a man's will to achieve his vision for all of mankind. you'll also get to see inside the humanity of him as someone with a childhood that was troubled, not always easy, and not always loved by the media and his competitors, but still committed to what he is creating for this world anyway.
