Incredible listen!
Revisado: 04-18-24
Such a complete and personal autobiography. Candor. More self deprecation than I expected. Real insight into the mind and heart of an amazing woman and artist. Simply extraordinary to listen to her tell her life story.

Historia
By the time she became US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch had seen her share of corruption, instability, and tragedy in developing countries. But it came as a shock when, in early 2019, she was recalled from her post after a smear campaign by President Trump’s personal attorney and his associates—men operating outside of normal governmental channels, and apparently motivated by personal gain. Her courageous participation in the subsequent impeachment inquiry earned Yovanovitch the nation’s respect, and her dignified response to the president’s attacks won our hearts.

Must Reading. This is Courage.
Revisado: 04-04-22
Ambassador Yovanovitch tells a remarkable story that outlines her early life and Foreign Service career in a way that will hopefully inspire many younger readers to seek entry into the diplomatic service. The clarity with which she outlines some of the tough predicaments she faced during her career, both personally and professionally, will help others to see that the Foreign Service is a calling that requires flexibility, bravery and intellect. A little humor and perspective help too, and Ambassador Yovanovitch has both. It is the complicated and almost unreal saga of a President and his personal lawyer looking to undermine her in a job over which the President had hiring and firing authority that is most alarming and crazy and surreal. We owe Ambassador Yovanovitch a huge debt of gratitude for standing up, testifying and speaking the truth. She held to her oath to the Constitution at a time of personal peril and during a period of great personal loss for her. It is my hope that this book helped her to liberate her reactions and feelings and that we will see her on the national stage in the coming years. What an articulate, intelligent and scary book!

Historia
Working with the full cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith have accessed a wealth of previously untapped materials. While drawing liberally from the artist's famously eloquent letters, they have also delved into hundreds of unpublished family correspondences, illuminating with poignancy the wanderings of Van Gogh's troubled, restless soul. Naifeh and Smith bring a crucial understanding to the larger-than-life mythology of this great artist.

Spectacular writing. Remarkable research.
Revisado: 01-26-22
This book enthralled me from start to finish. All 45 hours of it. The depth of research and the amazing writing tell the story of an artist who remains mysterious to us all. It was great to learn more of the truth about his difficult personality, lifelong struggles with mental health, and deep/complex relationship with his brother. I cannot recommend it more highly. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Vincent and Theo and their unending communication by letter. They tell so much of their own story.

Historia
Poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late 20s, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born - a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam - and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation.

Historia
A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home.

Richter’s account of the role of America’s diplomats in the wars in the Middle East and the Muslim world supplies a crucial and - until now - missing part of how these wars are being fought. An important addition to appreciating the roles of these diplomats, and an in-depth look into the complexity and length of these wars and nation-building, The Ambassadors is a critical piece of modern day history.

A Must Read about America's Best Diplomats
Revisado: 02-10-20
This book is a superb summary of what the best American diplomats do in the toughest of places. Often unsung heroes, each of the four Ambassadors profiled have made their share of headlines over the years both in the countries in which they served and here at home. Diplomacy is a tough job and, after hearing how well we have been served by Ryan Crocker, Anne Patterson, Robert Ford and Chris Stevens, I more deeply appreciate the sacrifice and grit of these and other public servants. Impressive and patriotic Americans all.

The Testament of Mary

Historia
Meryl Streep’s performance of Colm Tóibín's acclaimed portrait of Mary is hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “an ideal audiobook,” presenting the three-time Academy Award-winner in “yet another great role.” Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary presents Mary as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity. In the ancient town of Ephesus, Mary lives alone, years after her son's crucifixion. She has no interest in collaborating with the authors of the Gospel. They are her keepers, providing her with food and shelter and visiting her regularly. She does not agree that her son is the Son of God; nor that his death was "worth it"; nor that the "group of misfits he gathered around him, men who could not look a woman in the eye," were holy disciples. This woman who we know from centuries of paintings and scripture as the docile, loving, silent, long-suffering, obedient, worshipful mother of Christ becomes a tragic heroine with the relentless eloquence of Electra or Medea or Antigone, in a portrait so vivid and convincing that our image of Mary will be forever transformed.
