On a warm spring morning Margot approaches one of her clients on a busy train platform. He is looking down at his phone, with his duffel bag in hand as the train approaches. Story flowed well and wasn’t too redundant but gave all the clues we needed to figure it out.

Amazing Performance, Decent Story, Dumb Ending
Revisado: 02-05-25
Stumbled upon this in free audiobooks, which is always a gamble. The story (though redundant at times) and twist(s) were decent. I didn’t find it as hard to believe as other readers. It has, does and could happen. The ending is silly, and it felt like a disappointing payout to both the plot and a character I’d mostly rooted for.
*Potential spoilers* start here: I wanted her to come full circle and not base her opinions and actions on her controlling friend(s) and her ex bf, Jack; but alas, she was in the end mentally ill and could not see past it all to live a normal life even after so much planning. It almost felt anti climatic esp after the mention of George (& his potential capture of her) in the epilogue.

Historia
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Compelling & engaging until the twist…
Revisado: 02-02-25
…and then it felt as though the author had been assigned a word cap or ran out of steam. The last several chapters & ending lacked detail and felt rushed to conclude an otherwise engaging & detailed plot, in which the unreliable narrator could have given us a bit more— as they had in the first 95% of the story.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

… redundant story with a horrible payoff of an ending after keeping me engaged most of the book. Excellent performance/ storytelling. I will be searching for more from this narrator. All that to say, it was found in the free section.

Revisado: 01-03-25
The town of Salisbury is truly fleshed out as a main character. It’s in this book we realize, Mr. Dawson rarely mentions anything as filler. Rather, as just enough foreshadowing to satisfy the sleuth in his readers.

As eluded to towards the end of the previous book, there is human trafficking (triggering for some readers potentially). Otherwise, it offers great storytelling and even better character development.

Historia
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. At first it seems like an open and shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. Then new evidence makes Mack suspect the man who reported the crime is in fact the perpetrator. But Mack isn't the only one with a stake in the case.

Excellent Character Development & Storytelling
Revisado: 01-03-25
I happily stumbled upon this series via a search for my boy, Simon Vance, who never disappoints. The writing is strong and flows well for me to listen to while being active or to set the timer & drift off to sleep and circle back to catch what I missed. Purchased & downloaded the second book before finishing this one.

A decent bow on a great series
Revisado: 01-03-25
I like the way this book tied in (mostly) everything from the earlier books. For me, the storyline was not as streamlined as the first three books. I want a fifth book with these beloved characters, which is seemingly setup in the Epilogue regarding one of the ancillary characters’ secret(s). I hope so, but we shall see.
