You grew on me
Revisado: 04-16-25
I don’t read non-fiction because there are too many great stories like this.
The devil is in the detail and Steffano’s observed descriptions of his adventure are surroundings are constant, thorough and fascinating. One feels they’re hiking next to him, scrambling over rocks, climbing vertical cliffs, striding swiftly, giddy with laughter or slightly to very frustrated from injuries or the lack of potable water.
Intertwined within the trek is Steffano’s passion for the environmental health of the earth - and the consequence of man’s treading too hard.
Steffano’s journey was transformative both physical and mental, body and soul.
If you don’t get his quirky sense of humor, you won’t get him. I The metaphors were on the hoaky side - but also a little endearing, and in the end, I found this to be an exceptional read. Lastly, the AI voice was ok.

Historia
For months in early 1980, scientists, journalists, and ordinary people listened anxiously to rumblings in the long quiescent volcano Mount St. Helens. Still, when a massive explosion took the top off the mountain, no one was prepared. Fifty-seven people died, including newlywed logger John Killian (for years afterward, his father searched for him in the ash), scientist Dave Johnston, and celebrated local curmudgeon Harry Truman. The lives of many others were forever changed.

Historia
Insects are the most successful group of animals ever to have lived. They comprise a million species and perhaps 10 quintillion individuals: one in every four animals on the planet is a beetle; one in every ten is a butterfly or moth. Much of life on earth depends on the activities of these busy, teeming arthropods, from pollination to the breaking down of waste matter. In Alien Worlds, Steve Nicholls draws on a lifetime of writing about, photographing and filming the natural world to create an ambitious account of insect evolution and biology

Historia
In July 1973, Bob Tininenko, his wife Linda, and his brother in-law Jim Fisher set sail from Tacoma, Washington, on a 31-foot trimaran, down the West Coast to Costa Rica. The journey was expected to take a matter of weeks, but 10 days into the cruise, the party encountered a freak storm off the coast of Northern California. When gale-force winds and 50-foot waves capsized their boat, the voyage became a nightmare. For 72 days, the trio was lost at sea. Challenged by nature and compromised by a bitter rivalry, their courage and will to live was put to the ultimate test.

An account of perseverance and survival and compromise by those bearing very opposing views: Does God help those who help themselves or do we simply lay back and place all faith in God to save us without lifting a finger? Great listen.

Knowing the basic story, I’m interested in the background, people and details. This is written with all in mind. It never lost my interest and I think the personal connection the writer had via his father furthered his desire for accuracy all those years later. Great book!
