This is a favorite work and I have listened to many versions. what a JOY to hear ED'S vibrant delivery of a character.

This was a very well matched ensemble. The audio levels are well balanced, and each does a very good job.
(I'm just an EL fan :-) )

Just finished listening to the audiobook, "Hillbilly Elegy" written AND narrated by the next VPOTUS J.D. Vance. Here is my 5-Star review from Audible:

"OK, yes, I read this book in hopes of getting to know the next VPOTUS J.D. Vance, but wow! This memoir will touch so many Americans: not just hillbillies :-)

This is a story of breaking generational curses, and reaching one's potential against ALL odds.

Note: there is a LOT of profanity... a LOT.
But this is how JD was raised. He has provided a level of transparency which is unprecedented. I can see many being convicted, encouraged, and delivered thanks to JD's willingness to pull back the veil on:

Hillbilly life,
growing up in poverty,
domestic violence,
Violence culture,
addict culture,
Welfare mindsets,
Parental promiscuity/ multiple partners...
And so more.

We think that Trump's survival is a miracle, and it is. But JD Vance's survival is no less a testimony of the Mercy, Grace, and provision of God!

Of course each person's experience is her own, but I was shocked at Emma's raw portrayal of her life in the Amish Community. I had only listened to light, Christian, Amish/Mennonite. fiction novels. Emma describes a much darker view into family life, dating rituals, and the hierarchy in the very strictest of Amish sects. I appreciate and respect her candor as she described the dangers brought on by her naivete and lack of education.

What a strong woman.

The nararrator is also perfectly matched to the work.

if you like the TV series, YOU'LL LOVE THE BOOK

I have watched the CTM series many times. the book makes the series come even MORE alive. Clearly many stories on the series got their basic plot from the pages, but it's the nuances of life in Poplar that are so much richer after reading the novel. well done PBS for starting true to Jennifer Worth's voice.

Cecil and Woodhouse: a BRILLIANT Combination

Jonathan Cecil IS the voice of P G. Woodhouse characters....

He clearly rehearses such that there are no stumbles - I am transported to the Salon with the antagonist and sound tea as he rambles on. I am just trying to time my sips so that I don't spray at my new friend.

I greatly enjoy how the books refer back to characters in other books. I feel such a surge of joy when I recall the back story of a person, family, location. (the way you do when you are reminiscing old friends)

Always such fun!

I'm a 56-year Old fan!

I spent many joyful hours listening to and teaching Laurie Berkner songs to my grand-, foster-, and bonus children.

None are nearby just now, but why should that stop me from enjoying time in the Song and Story Kitchen?!?

Here's what I love about the LB catalog:

1. Laurie's delivery is never pandering (you know that fake, syrupy way some adults talk to children- I hate that! She speaks to them in a way to encourage curiosity, imagination, and silliness.

2. Laurie's music isn't CHEESY (i.e. 'ehh is for kids, they won't know the difference'). It's QUALITY lyrics are well- thought-out. They are challenging and witty rhymes- great for language development. And the arrangements are GOOD! Her songs are radio quality.

3. Laurie's music encourages movement! We have spent hours on our FEET listening/ watching and PARTICIPATING in the experience.

These qualities are so important. Her competition isn't other child-centered entertainment. Her competition is the garbage that does get airplay these days. I am very grateful for music, dances, activities that I want the children in my life to enjoy.

If anyone knows Laurie, tell her that Momma Gayle is sure grateful!

EXACTLY what I Look FOR IN AN AUDIO BOOK!!!

For years I have encouraged people with sleep disturbance issues to listen to audiobooks. The criteria is this: pick books which are interesting enough that you will listen; not so full of action and intrigue that they keep you awake; and definitely not full of horror/ danger (because audiobooks will populate your dreams).

Of course, a good reader is crucial: this work has a Great Reader! He made STATISTICS seem interesting (what?) - it's actually a great article about something i care absolutely nothing about - but my brother would and i could amaze him with my knowledge! :-D

I highly recommend this - even if you plan to stay awake. This is a Keeper!

not a Christian book

not sure how this book came up on my search list, but this is NOT A CHRISTIAN Fiction book. it's Mormon.

just warning you. it celebrated poligamy and 'eternal' marriage and other stories described non Christian, nonrepentant individuals. it wasn't until a later story that they I realized they were Mormons. I listened through the book to see if someone eventually explained the Truth to the protagonist. But no...

a collection really needs chapters identified so you can FIND a story again. I have to tab through to find a story if I want to listen again. :-/

the individual story TITLES are not identified by the reader, so I don't even know the title of the stories :-/
