Good story but narration audibility was a problem
Revisado: 06-08-18
This is an interesting detective story with a relatable, flawed protagonist. But I found the narration difficult to understand. The acting aspect was well done but his words were too fast and ran together. Slowing down the speed did not help enough to keep it from being a chore to listen to for me.

Depressing, not that engaging
Revisado: 11-30-15
While the action in this story made me wince frequently, the characters were not believable enough to come to life in my mind.
As other reviewers have commented, the narrative jumps around too much among the sisters and even between first-person and third-person, with little vocal variation, which makes it hard to follow as an audio book.
I also found the quality of writing lacking, with awkward sentence construction and occasional misuse of a word; e.g., "sacrilegious" where I think "sacrosanct" was actually meant.

Well plotted and true to the original characters
Revisado: 09-11-15
I'm thrilled that Lagercrantz is on the job to keep this series going. The characters and style seem consistent with the predecessor novels. The emotional connection with the characters is perhaps not as intense but I would definitely read more in the series by this author. The plot has the expected intricacies and the narrator was great.

This is not a "novelette"
Revisado: 07-09-15
Rather than being a novelette which would have an ending, this is a series of sample champters from several different mystery stories set in Hawaii. I feel like I got charged for an advertisement. The writing is pretty amateurish too.

How can a book with a serial killer be so boring?
Revisado: 05-20-14
This book is more about the dysfunctional family of the adolescent narrator than the killer, although the killings provide a constant sense of dread and concern about the detective father's inability to nab the guy. If the work were a memoir, I could forgive the repetitive and uncomfortable exposition on her period and unenthusiastic sexual forays and the details of the unremarkable games she plays with her younger sister. But since it's fiction couldn't it be a little more interesting?
Maynard's craft is excellent; too bad the content is so dull and depressing.

Pleasant but not outstanding
Revisado: 03-05-14
Some research was done for this post-Civil War story which is set after the Civil War, but it must have focused on the war, livery stables, and saw mills. The characters are far too modern in their speech and behavior to be believable--the heroine in particular spouts modern psychobabble. On the other hand, most of the characters are well-developed and interesting. The plot line is predictable but I liked the emphasis on honor and family.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Great story, fantastic reader
Revisado: 01-28-14
This story is packed with pathos and distinctive characters. David Pittu nails them all.
I've read two other Donna Tartt novels and while this one is quite different from those, the things they have in common are an uncommon insight into the minds of young people and wonderful writing.
This sprawling story starts off a little slow but stay with it for a satisfying read--a terrific value for one credit!

Not just for kids
Revisado: 11-23-10
This is a sentimental, heartwarming story read with a lovely British accent that will get you in the Christmas spirit. The historical detail of what it was like to be poor in Victorian England is vivid and educational as well. I would recommend this to any female age 8 and up! Not that the guys aren't welcome to read it too, but I think girls and women will particularly like the theme of sisterly devotion.

Superintendent Runcorn (Anne Perry fans will remember him as William Monk's ex-boss) is feeling rather lonely during his holiday on the remote, snowy island of Anglesey, off the northern coast of Wales. However, he is suddenly called into action when the sister of the local vicar is discovered murdered and draped over a gravestone in her brother's churchyard.

A good story well-read
Revisado: 11-23-10
I am a longtime Anne Perry fan and thoroughly enjoyed this story even though the usual cast is not around. The interior life of a middle-aged man who knows his shortcomings--who is in love with his soulmate btw--is sensitively and realistically drawn.

Fast-paced and interesting
Revisado: 11-15-10
The protagonist of this story is an all-too-human young woman raising twin babies alone. I quickly came to care about her and to be gripped by the twists and turns of the story. The supporting characters seem like real people and not props. I will be looking for this author's next one.
