We aren’t born into a self. It is created without our consent, built out of our childhoods, our circumstances, and chance. But in the busyness of adult life, we rarely have time to think clearly about the questions that matter most. Writing with the passion and clarity that made his debut, To Shake the Sleeping Self, a national best seller, Jedidiah Jenkins brings together new and old writings to explore the eight themes all of us face as we find our way in life: ego, family, home, friendship, love, work, death, the soul.

I read his 2 other books first and enjoyed them. It’s clear that he is emotionally stunted from trying to be the person his mother wants. So, it seemed like the ramblings of an early 20’s man. I look forward to later writings with more depth.

Lindsey always knew she wanted to be a detective. Her inspiration came after reading about the murders committed by Ted Bundy, who grew up in her hometown of Tacoma, Washington. Also seared into her memory was the 1986 murder of a young girl who'd been out for a bike ride when she went missing. The teen was later found murdered, but the case was never solved. The senseless killing of an innocent young girl would leave a black cloud over Tacoma for three decades.

The narrator
Revisado: 12-15-23
She was really distracting. She had a planned cadence whether the subject warranted it or not. Over pronounced s at the end of sentences. I think I would have liked it more had the author read it.

Important stories
Revisado: 02-21-23
This is an important perspective. Yes, the narration was at times painful. When she mispronounced a word, she didn’t stop and fix it and there were background noises that were frustrating. But the stories are worth it and she’s a good narrator, this just was obviously not professionally done. Kudos Dr. G. Most wouldn’t have survived or thrived like you. Many lives are the better for having you in them.

Should be half the time
Revisado: 08-28-21
There were good parts to the book, no doubt. I understand her frustration but, disagree that the airing of her rants had to be so long. Her point could have been made in half the time. The other disappointing part was she didn’t take any responsibility for anything. It might’ve helped someone if she had reflected back to things she would’ve done differently. She basically took everyone who’d done her wrong and brought them to task, ad nauseam.
I read/listened because Lori Gottlieb recommended it and I LOVE her book. It’s everything this book isn’t, funny, insightful, etc.

What a gifted story teller! The narrator was perfect! There isn’t a thing I would change (except whoever added later recordings of some passages by the narrator. It was very noticeable) I loved every minute of this book!

I’ve never left a review but this warrants one. This resonates with me so deeply. I was also ready to hear it. Any bad reviews, I believe, are from those not yet in a place to hear it. This is the most powerful book I’ve read to date. If you are open and ready, listen. I can’t emphasize this enough.
