Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Two well reputed writers resulted in a book that, while it held your interest, was filled with cliches and the amount that a person had to suspend disbelief was excessive. B thought out alternatives

Historia
On Memorial Day in Jewel, Minnesota, the body of wealthy landowner Jimmy Quinn is found floating in the Alabaster River, dead from a shotgun blast. The investigation falls to Sheriff Brody Dern, a highly decorated war hero who still carries the physical and emotional scars from his military service. Even before Dern has the results of the autopsy, vicious rumors begin to circulate that the killer must be Noah Bluestone, a Native American WWII veteran who has recently returned to Jewel with a Japanese wife.

Historia
When Maggie Blackthorne returns to her hometown after nearly 20 years to serve as an Oregon State Police Sergeant, she expects to deal with the usual suspects - drunk drivers, oxy slingers, and the occasional rural scofflaw. But after she stumbles upon the bullet-ridden bodies of twin brothers, she realizes she’s stepped into something much more sinister. With little homicide experience, Maggie and her partner, Trooper Hollis Jones, find themselves thrust into the murder investigation.

As the book went along it became weak and wearing
Revisado: 07-04-23
I loved the Eastern Oregon setting. Good charactor development.
Alternative lifestyles, belief systems and roles for the win.
Traditional lifestyles, roles and belief systems, not so much. Big time.
The depth and breadth of the heroine’s salty language was impressive, even amusing, as was her use of blasphemy. (Except for Christianity she managed to spare the other mainstream faiths.)
The narrator might have checked the correct pronunciation of Willamette, but native Oregonians are used to non-natives and A.I. mispronouncing it, so that can be forgiven.
Try books by William Kreuger for good writing in the same genre with your money being much better spent.

A skeleton with a bullet in its skull. A natural disaster. Relationship problems with not one, but two women in his life. What else could possibly go wrong for Port Stirling Police Chief Matt Horning? Woken by the ˜Big One', an earthquake at his Oregon beach-front home, things would only get worse from there for Matt Horning.

Painful
Revisado: 03-26-23
Painful. Utility services back with in a week of an earthquake - with huge aftershocks- so profound that it changes the course of a river across a range of mountains from it?
The biggest thing for the city police to focus time and attention on is a 120+ year old murder?
I don’t think so.
At least we found out where Matt’s money came from.
We forgive the narrator his occasional mispronunciation.

You can tell it’s written by a woman. Which, as another woman, is fine. But a scared and tearful Texan police chief? No thank you. Romantic entanglement with a subordinate within four months on the job? There’s grounds for dismissal.
And native Western Oregonians would hope for a little better research. One example - the Coast Guard is more, much more, than competent to handle drug interdictions. In fact, the CGC Steadfast is internationally known for it.

I was hopeful things would get better, tighter, at least more congruent, as the story progressed. Sadly, they did not.

Revisado: 09-21-22
It kept us listening - since we've listened to the other 18. But this was far from his best work. Impossible to ignore how formulatic and gratuitous it is.
If this is one of the first of his books you've read don't let it stop you from reading others There are others that are better. For instance, "Lightning Strikes."

Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

Sheer grit on our part got us through this book.
Revisado: 02-06-22
At least the narration matched the character and the narrartor was easy to understand.
This book was painful. We forced ourselves to finish it to get to the review part. Chick Lit of the highest, or lowest, order.
Was the heroine's infatuation with the word, "fuck," supposed to make her endearing? It didn't.
Her continual lack of self awareness, jumping to lame conclusions, mentally imparting her own slant on life into everyone else's motivation and her moral double standards made a person want to give her a good shake. AND, warn her love interest to run.
To expect the reader to buy a total personality change in the last one hour of the book is kinda beyond the pale.
It could have been a good book. Maybe next time the writers will have more maturity and depth.

Revisado: 05-28-21
Very shallow plot. Redundent. 1/3 of the novella could have been cut.
Her other books, in other series, were much better.
There were many male character voices that the narrator poorly executed. She did fine with the female voices.
