Historia
A reluctant psychic with a haunted past. A straight-laced FBI agent sworn to protect. A mystery they must solve together. Hailey Arquette uses ancestry rooted in the occult to hide her gifts in the small southern town of Hamchet, Texas. Experiencing a victim’s last moments when touching an object isn’t something she can turn off, but helps her to navigate the shadowy world where betrayal walks hand in hand with a smile. Worst (robotic) narration ever
Revisado: 01-30-25
The story line was half interesting and this would make an OK series. But the “Virtual Voice” made following along almost unbearable. The voice is humanoid but with misplaced inflections, pauses that serve no purpose, and no voice alteration for the different character. So unless the text states “Trenton said,” there’s no telling which character is speaking.
I won’t continue this audio series, but I also will pay more attention to avoid any audio title claiming “Virtual Voices” for narration.

Sparrow “Ro” Meadowcroft is about to get the promotion she’s always dreamed of–curator of the museum where she works. She loves old things and the history that surrounds them, so when a patron leaves some items to the museum, Ro is eager to dig in. The sword in the stone that comes with those items is clearly a joke. A well-made but obvious replica meant to be a conversation starter. Why anyone would think that belonged in the museum is beyond her, but she can’t resist taking a crack at it and finding out if she’s the chosen one. And as it turns out...she is.

Cute premise.
Frequent excessively detailed scenes, objects, food, & action descriptions (i.e. long winded ). Slowish pace countered by fitting (regal-sounding) narration. It picked up in the last third or so, but not quite enough to convince me to get the next book in the series.

Revisado: 09-13-24
I was looking forward to the combination of Idaho mountain setting, art, Native American culture, and who-done-it mystery. But …
Stereotyped characters were worsened by the awkward narration. The speaker tried hard, but sounded like a grade school teacher narrating a story book to a class of toddlers - way too exaggerated with some embarrassing accents thrown in.
Overly quick, pat, and cutesy wrap up of the entire book, just 3 minutes after the FL almost dies. The author ran out of ink or interest, maybe. Not going for the next in the series.

Without Shelby as the main character, this was just another spy/international intrigue novelette. Decent but cliched.

Historia
I’ve loved her from the first moment I saw her. And I’ve loved her every day since. Whether we’re together or we’re apart—that hasn’t changed. Which is saying a lot considering I don’t like most people. But life has thrown us a slew of curveballs and we went our separate ways. Life, family, jealousy—we let it all get in the way. I’m a dad now, and my little girl is my world. And after years apart, Presley is back in Cottonwood Cove. I don’t believe in fairytales or second chances. My heart belongs to my daughter now, and there is no room for complications.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 04-12-24
Sorry, but the main characters were so repetitive, cliched, angsty, & physically perfect, I wouldn’t care to know either one. A whole lotta whining goin’ on. I managed to get through half the chapters while doing house & yard work, but finally gave up. The female narrator was a bit raspy & breathy with the female lead; trying to sound sexy maybe, but sorta annoying.

Not disappointed at all in audiobook #7 in the series. Multiple side stories and action that converge. A possible new “gift” and assignment for Shelby. Still appreciate the narrator’s work with voice of Shelby. I binge-listened on this one. One worry: I am concerned how often Shelby’s stomach “clenches” and “twists.” I think she might need upper endoscopy.

Not as good as prior books in the series. A bit slow and more repetitive, w a larger cast of characters which got confusing at times. It was good though to have more than one mystery thrown in and with no one being murdered in the process.

Revisado: 03-05-24
The suspense, characters, and humor are still working well. The bad guys are a bit more gruesome, and the number of characters in the cast is starting to get a little top heavy, but the story still kept me squeezing in listening time every spare moment. Kudos again to the narrator.

Mostly gory & disconnected
Revisado: 03-03-24
Occasional snippets of interesting plot & character buried among cliched, boring, and unnecessarily gruesome passages. I could only make it about 2 hours into the narration of over 12 hours. Feel sorry for the competent narrator having this lengthy waste to have to read.
