The Last Monster on Earth is the first instalment of a brand new series, from the author of Dragonfire and Age of Dragonfire. An exciting new series of novels in a future world changed beyond imagining. What is the last thing you remember? When a mysterious phenomenon envelops the earth, turning humans into monsters; awakening in a strange new world and in an even stranger new body, is bound to leave one's mind in tatters. Left with nothing but a set of initials for a name and the strange photo of a mysterious girl, LJ can only hope to set out in search of what has become of civilisation. ...

wasted potential
Revisado: 04-05-25
while I have mostly negative things to say about it, I don't think it's bad, I just think it falls short of being good. the premise sounded quite intriguing, but the execution feels more like a run of the mill zombie story where the author just says "paws" instead of "hands".
despite being turned into strange, animalistic creatures, this hardly affects any of the characters in any significant way, besides the initial body horror of it all. we're told the creatures possess superior senses to humans, but through the story we're never shown that. for all there descriptions, the creatures see, hear, smell, feel, even emote, just the same as any human would. they accomplish nearly everything a human could, except driving, with little effort. there is so much wasted potential for body horror and even good drama because it never feels like their new bodies are anything other than a cosmetic for a otherwise human character.
big grips aside, prose was serviceable, characters were fine, maybe a hair too many though, plot was predictable, but narrativily done well. it's not revolutionary, but it was also free

fun but room for improvement
Revisado: 07-21-23
at one point it specifically mentioned no cell service in the house, later a character texts from the house and gets an immediate response. just a funny little continuity error but I'm looking forward to seeing this podcast improve in the future.
